Panthers Toppled By Mounties

Bradford, Pa.--The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford returned to their home field for the first time since 2019, but were unable to come away with a win, losing both games of a doubleheader with Mount Aloysius. They lost the opener 6-3 and the second game 9-3.

Game 1:

  • Mount Aloysius got off to a quick start, scoring in the first inning, but a jewel of a defensive play got the Panthers out of the inning with only one run scored. Nico Hall made an over the shoulder catch approaching the wall in left. He turned and fired the ball into Sam Dreistadt at short who was able to throw out a runner trying to score from second on the sacrifice.
  • The Panther offense was slow to start, but following a fourth-inning home run exploded for three runs to take the lead. Nick Stein and Jake McNabb started the inning by reaching on an error and a walk. Dreistadt drove in the first run, grounding a single through the right side. Following a strikeout and a grounder, Matt LaBadie came through with a clutch double to right-center to put the Panthers ahead.
  • The Panther lead did not last long, as the Mounties struck back with 4 runs on 3 hits and two costly errors to retake the lead for good. 
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to get runners on base in the final three innings, but were unable to scratch any more runs across.
  • Reid Tarnowski took the loss for the Panthers. he allowed 6 runs, with 3 being earned over 4 and 1/3 innings. He allowed 5 hits and struck out 1 batter.
  • Ben Suter had an impressive outing in relief. He threw the final 2 and 2/3 for the Panthers, allowing only 2 hits and collecting 3 strikeouts.
  • Dreistadt was the only Panther to record a multi-hit game. He finished 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.
  • LaBadie, Stein and Nico Hall tallied the other hits for the Panthers.

Game 2:

  • Game 2 started in a similar fashion, as the Mounties scratched an unearned run across in the first. Following a leadoff infield hit, they used a sacrifice bunt, an error, and a wild pitch to take the early lead.
  • After the hard-luck first inning, starting pitcher Alex Fetter settled down, allowing no runs over the next 4 innings.
  • Pitt-Bradford took advantage of Fetters early success, with another 3-run fourth inning. Evan Fragela led off with a single to right and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and passed ball. Following a walk, Bret Babcock singled through the right side to bring Fragela home to tie the game.
  • An error in the infield loaded the bases with one out and Nick Stein lined a single through the right side to bring home two more and give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
  • Mount Aloysius put up a big inning of their own in the 6th. they used only 2 hits with an error, 2 free passes and a pair of wild pitches to score 5. They chased Fetter after tying the game at 3 and tacked on three more with Hector Vargas on the mound.
  • The Mounties added one run in each of the final three frames to extend their lead to 6 runs.
  • Fetter picked up the loss in the game. he allowed only 1 earned run in 5 and 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up 3 hits and struck out 10 batters.
  • Vargas went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 1 batter.
  • Ben Mulhall pitched the final frame, allowing an unearned run without allowing a hit.
  • Offensively, Fragela and Babcock had 2-hit games. Fragela also threw two runners out stealing.

The Panthers are now 1-3 on the season with an 0-2 record in AMCC play. They will get right back to it on Wednesday, when they host Penn State-Behrend. Game 1 is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
