WILMINGTON, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team split both games of a doubleheader at Wilmington Sunday, capturing a 12-run shutout win in game one.
"Boyer threw a great game. He was extremely efficient only throwing 84 pitches for a complete game shutout," Head Coach Zach Foster said. "During that first game, our guys swung the bat very well. We had a few big two-out RBIs from Robert Sawicki, Brody Wood and Samuel Dreistadt. All in all, we played well enough to win both games. Bacha threw very well in game two and was a tough-luck loser. We hit the ball hard in game two, but they just didn't fall. That's baseball sometimes."
In game one, the Panthers earned their sixth win of the year and their fifth scoring 10 or more runs.
Ryan Boyer struck out five and scattered four hits in the complete-game shutout win, improving to 2-1 on the season.
Brody Wood had three hits in the first game to lead the Panthers' offensive effort.
Austin Parent had two hits in each game.
Game One: Pitt-Bradford 12, Wilmington 0
Pitt-Bradford scored its first run of the game in the top of the second. Brody Wood led off the frame with a double and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Samuel Dreistadt. Wood then came into score on a groundout off the bat of Robert Sawicki.
The Panthers grabbed three more in the top of the fourth.
Austin Parent walked, moved to third on a double by Tim Brown and scored on a sacrifice fly from Wood.
Sawicki then singled home Brown to put the Panthers ahead, 3-0.
Pitt-Bradford then took a commanding 7-0 lead in the fifth as Dalton Renn and Wood knocked RBI singles and Dreistadt then singled home Wood and Parent.
The Panthers then nearly doubled their lead in the final inning with six runs in the seventh.
Wood scored on an error and Dreistadt came into score on a sacrifice fly from Jason Lucarelli. Tyler Hoops then sent Lucarelli home with a triple and later scored himself on a single from Sawyer Packard.
Packard scored the final run of the game for the Panthers on an RBI double from Parent.
The Quakers had a runner aboard with one away in the bottom of the seventh, but Ryan Boyer induced a lineout double play to end the game and secure the win.
Strong pitching from Boyer went with the hot Pitt-Bradford hitting, as he went all seven innings and allowed just four hits. He sent down 11-straight batters from the end of the third inning into the seventh as part of the shutout effort.
Wood led the way with three hits while Hoops, Dalton Renn, Parent and Sawicki had a pair of hits apiece to aid the 14 base knocks as a team.
Game Two: Wilmington 5, Pitt-Bradford 2
In the top of the first, Austin Parent singled and sent Packard to third on an error.
Tim Brown the singled home Parent to put the Panthers ahead 1-0.
But a two-run homer from Wilmington put the Quakers ahead, 2-1, after the opening inning.
Wilmington built on its lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single.
Pitt-Bradford got it back in the eighth and cut the Wilmington lead to 3-2 after Colin Buckwalter scored as Dalton Renn grounded into a double play.
An RBI single and RBI double from Wilmington in the bottom of the eighth eventually put the Quakers up 5-2, and they'd eventually hold on to earn the win.
Andrew Bacha started the game for the Panthers on the mound and delivered 7.2 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out three while giving up four earned runs.
Benjamin Hayes worked the final out necessary for the Panthers.
Parent and Buckwalter led the way for the Panthers with two hits apiece. Packard and Brown added one hit each to complete the six-hit effort.
Up next, the Panthers will head to Houghton for a doubleheader Monday.
