Panthers Begin SUNYAC/AMCC Swim Championships, In 8th After Night 1

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Women's swimming team began the inaugural SUNYAC/AMCC Swimming Championships on Saturday in Buffalo. After 2 relays, the Panthers are in 8th place after collecting 40 points.

The joint swim championship meet, which replaced the conference's previous connection with the Empire 8, contains 4 teams from the AMCC and 6 from the SUNYAC. The teams representing the AMCC are Pitt-Bradford, Alfred State, Penn State-Behrend, and Penn State-Altoona. The SUNYAC is represented by State University of New York Schools based in Cortland, Fredonia, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego, and Potsdam. The event is being held at Flickinger Aquatic Center, in Buffalo, N.Y.

The first night of competition at the championship meet contained two relays, the 800-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard medley relay. The Panthers had one team in each race and finished 8th in the freestyle and 9th in the medley.

The Panthers' 800-yard relay team of Bailey Fedak, Skyler Bland, Carly Evers, and Emma Slocum finished in 8:52.22. Fedak posted the best split for Pitt-Bradford, finishing the opening leg in 2:06.32. Bland had the next best time, swimming her portion of the relay in 2:12.36. Emma Slocum closed with a 2:16.08 anchor leg, while Evers posted a split of 2:17.46.

The Panthers used the same four swimmers in the multidisciplinary 200-yard medley relay, where the team finished 9th with a time of 2:02.53. Slocum started the race with a 31.41-second backstroke leg. Bland swam the breaststroke in 34.58 seconds, and Fedak completed the butterfly in 29.85 seconds. Evers swam the freestyle leg, closing the race with a 26.69-second split.

Through two swimming events, the Panthers are in 8th overall, and 4th in the AMCC Standings. They will be right back in the pool tomorrow for the second day of competition. Day Two will see the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, and 200-yard freestyle relays completed. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the finals starting at 5:30.
