Panthers Rally in 4th to Beat Mount Aloysius

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team rallied from a 7 point deficit in the final quarter to pick up their first win of 2020 over Mount Aloysius by a score of 59-55.

Game Notes:

  • Pitt-Bradford got off to a slow offensive start in the game as they were held scoreless for the opening 3 minutes of play, allowing the Mounties to build a 7-0 lead. Shirleah Ragin hit a three from the wing to kick start the Panthers with 6:49 to go. Ragin scored the first 10 points for the Panthers as Mount Aloysius went ahead 19-10. Daizjah Brown hit a jump shot in the final seconds of the first quarter to pull the Panthers within 7 heading into the second quarter.
  • Brown hit another basket, a driving layup to start the second quarter and Ragin made another jump shot to cut the deficit to 3 points. After a few more stops, Jasmin Miller made a basket inside to cut the lead down to 1 point. in just 3 minutes of play in the second.
  • Mount Aloysius scored after a timeout, but it did not hold the Panthers off for long as Brown hit a free throw and Jenna Hicks tied the game at 21 with 5:19 to go.
  • The Panthers were unable to move ahead of the Mounties, as their offense went cold for the next 4 minutes. This allowed the Mounties to rebuild their 7 point advantage. Ragin made another inside jumper with just 16 seconds to go to send the game to halftime with the Panthers trailing 28-23.
  • Mount Aloysius hit a three to start the second half, but the Panthers once again locked down on defense, keeping them scoreless for the next 4 minutes. In this span, Shaelyn Snipes made a fast-break layup off a steal, Jenna Hicks made a putback layup and Brown hit a three from the right-wing to return the deficit to only 1 point. The Panthers were unable to hold the mounties down for the remainder of the quarter, as they restored their 7 point lead heading to the final quarter. 
  • The teams traded early baskets in the final period, but a 7 point run in just over a minute and a half saw the Panthers edge their way back into the game. Daizjah Brown made back to back baskets for the Panthers to kick-off the rally and Ragin sent the crowd into a frenzy, completing an old fashioned three-point play to pull Pitt-Bradford to within one point.
  • Mount Aloysius answered the run with a three-pointer, but after a tough offensive rebound from Jenna Hicks, Ashley Hall hit a huge three to nullify the Mountie basket. On the next possession, Ragin stole the ball and fed Brown who raced down court to put the Panthers ahead. Following a timeout and another defensive stop, Ragin went coast to coast after pulling down a rebound to score again and put the Panthers up 3. Two Shaelyn Snipes free throws got the lead to 5 points, and another Brown jumper countered two Mount Aloysius free throws to send the game to its final stages.
  • Four straight Mountie free throws saw the Panther lead cut to one but a mix of strong Pitt-Bradford defense and clutch free-throw shooting from Ragin and Snipes saw the Panthers put the game away. 

Leaders:

  • Shirleah Ragin led all scorers with 22 points. She made 7 of 16 from the field, including 2 of 4 from deep and added 6 out of 7 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and had 3 steals.
  • Daizjah Brown set a new career-high, scoring 16 points for the Panthers. She also made 7 of 16 from the field.
  • Shaelyn Snipes recorded her 4th double-double of the season. She went for 11 points and 11 rebounds. 7 of the 11 rebounds were on the offensive end.
  • Jenna Hicks grabbed 10 rebounds including 8 on offense.
  • Cassidy King was unable to score in the game, but that didn't stop her from making an impact. She grabbed 10 rebounds and had 3 steals.
  • The Panthers grabbed 27 offensive rebounds in the game, helping them to a 54-36 advantage on the boards.

The victory moves the Panthers to 3-20 on the season and 3-15 in AMCC play. They will look to build off the momentum from the win when they host D'Youville on Wednesday evening in their Play4Kay game. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
