Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team wrapped up the SUNYAC/AMCC Swimming Championship meet after four days of competition on Saturday evening. Conan Young made his final mark on the event, winning the 1650-yard freestyle as the Panthers finished the event with 158 team points, good for an 8th-place finish.
After multiple top 3 finishes, Young was able to break through in his signature event, winning the mile with a time of 16:18.96. He was the top-seeded swimmer coming into the race, and held his place, winning by 2.76 seconds. This was the 2nd time in three seasons that Young has won the event at the championship meet, and the 3rd in three that he has been named AMCC Champion.
Conan was not the only Panther to qualify for the finals, as two of his teammates also reached the final session. Duncan Young competed in the 200-yard backstroke and qualified for finals by finishing 16th in the preliminary round with a time of 2:06.32. In the finals, he cut more than two seconds off his time which resulted in a 13th place finish. He swam the race in 2:04.18.
Eric Reynolds was able to make the finals in the 200-yard breaststroke by qualifying with the 15th-best time at 2:20.54. Reynolds cut his time to 2:19.05, which allowed him to move up to 15th place.
Pitt-Bradford fielded two teams in the event closing 400-yard freestyle relay. The Panthers' top team of Conan Young, Duncan Young, Nathan Ryan, and Dawson Mallery finished 8th at 3:25.98. They finished 8th. Pitt-Bradford's second relay team of Reynolds, Giulio Minerbi, Peyton Haight, and Camden Tetenov finished in 3:40.45 to take 27th,
The remaining 7 Panthers each swam in one preliminary round on the day and could not secure a spot in the finals. The 100-yard freestyle contained four Pitt-Bradford swimmers. Dawson Mallery led the pack, finishing 26th with a time of 54.84. Giulio Minerbi was two spots and 0. 88 seconds behind Mallery in 28th at 55.72. Greg Tyler and Brennan Schultz finished back to back in 31st and 32nd. Shultz finished with a time of 57.24, while Shultz posted a time of 57.89. Nathan Ryan missed out in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing 2st with a time of 2:13.40.
Due to the grueling nature of the 1650, the top 8 seeded times automatically advanced to the finals, with places 9 through 26 determined with preliminary races. Peyton Haight and Camden Tetenov each competed in the preliminary races, finishing in 18th and 25th respectively. Haight finished 18th with a posted time of 18:34.16. Tetenov was 25th in 21:23.38.
The Panthers 2024-25 campaign comes to a close with the completion of the championship meet. As a team, Pitt-Bradford finished 8th in the meet, and 4th among AMCC teams.
