Conan Young Sets New Record in 500, Panthers Remain in 8th

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team was back in action at the SUNYAC-AMCC Swimming Championships. Junior Conan Young broke his own program best time in the 500-yard freestyle while the Panthers remained in 8th place with 69 points through 14 events.

Young started the day strong, qualifying for the finals in the 500 with the best time in the event. He won the preliminary round with a time of 4:42.80, 1.33 seconds ahead of the next competitor. In the finals, Young improved his time by nearly two seconds, finishing in 4:40.73. Unfortunately, he was 1.15 seconds behind the winner to finish in 2nd. With the runner-up finish, he broke his old program record by just one-tenth of a second. 

The finals also included one relay event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Panthers had two teams enter the relay, with their top team finishing 10th, and the second team finishing 18th. The Panthers' top relay of Conan Young, Duncan Young, Nathan Ryan, and Giulio Minerbi finished in 1:35.71. They were 12.09 seconds behind the winning team, collecting 14 team points. The other relay of Dawson Mallery, Greg Tyler, Brennan Shultz and Camden Tetenov took 18th, posting a finals time of 1:38.80.

Young was the only Panther to qualify as an individual for the day. Peyton Haight and Camden Tetenov competed in the preliminary round in the 500, but missed out, finishing 31st and 35th. Haight posted a time of 5:25.42, while Tetenov finished in 6:02.79.

Three Panthers entered the 200-yard Individual Medley but fell short in the preliminary round. Duncan Young just missed out on the finals, finishing in 20th place with a time of 2:06.75. He was 1.65 seconds behind the final qualifying time. Eric Reynolds finished 25th with a time of 2:08.64, while Nathan Ryan was 31st in 2:13.37.

In the 50-yard freestyle sprint, 4 Panthers attempted to make the finals, but all missed out. Giulio Minerbi had the best time for the Panthers at 24.34 seconds, while Dawson Mallery was a spot behind him with 24.78 seconds. They were 37th and 38th respectively. Brennan Schultz and Greg Tyler also finished back-to-back in 43rd and 44th place. Schultz swam the sprint in 25.32 seconds, while Tyler finished in 25.54 seconds. 

The third day of competition at the Championship is set to begin with preliminary rounds at 10:00 a.m., with finals starting at 5:30 tomorrow. Swimmers will compete in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard medley relay.
