Panthers in 8th after Opening Night at SUNYAC/AMCC Swimming Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team picked up 38 points and is in 8th place after the opening night of the inaugural SUNYAC-AMCC Swimming Championships.

The joint swim championship meet, which replaced the conference's previous connection with the Empire 8, contains 4 teams from the AMCC and 6 from the SUNYAC. The teams representing the AMCC are Pitt-Bradford, Alfred State, Penn State-Behrend, and Penn State-Altoona. The SUNYAC is represented by State University of New York Schools based in Cortland, Fredonia, New Paltz, Oneonta, Oswego, and Potsdam. The event is being held at Flickinger Aquatic Center, in Buffalo, N.Y.

The opening night contained finals sessions in diving, as well as 2 men's relay events, the 800-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard medley relay.

The Panthers had 2 teams in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The Panthers' top team of Conan Young, Duncan Young, Nathan Ryan, and Giulio Minerbi finished in 8th place with a time of 7:40.21. They earned 22 team points. Conan Young had the best split for Pitt-Bradford, swimming the opening leg in 1:46.82. His brother Duncan Young was 2nd with a 1:52.03 split. Ryan finished his leg in 1:58.16, while Minerbi closed in 2:03.20.

Pitt-Bradford's second team of Payton Haight, Eric Reynolds, Dawson Mallery, and Camden Tetenov finished 16th with a time of 8:19.74 and picked up 2 points. Reynolds led the relay with a split of 1:58.32. Haight started the race in 2:04.12, while Mallery and Tetenov closed with splits of 2:07.63 and 2:09.67 respectively. 

The Panthers closed the night with one entry in the 200-yard medley relay. The Panthers finished in 10 with a finals time of 1:49.96. Haight opened the race with a 29.97-second split in the backstroke, while Reynolds followed with a 28.78-second breaststroke leg. Ryan swam the butterfly in 26.52 seconds, and Mallery closed the race with the freestyle leg in 24.69 seconds. 

Overall, the Panthers are in 8th out of 10 teams, while they are 4th of 4 in the AMCC Standings. They will be right back in the pool tomorrow for the second day of competition. Day two will see the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, and 200-yard freestyle relays completed. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the finals starting at 5:30.
