Young Takes 2nd in 500, Panthers in 5th after Day 1

Fredonia, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team began competition at the Fredonia Invitational on Friday, picking up 220 team points to finish the opening session in 5th place.

In the preliminary round, seven Panthers qualified for finals over three events, while the team also fielded two teams in each of the relays.

Conan Young was the top qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle. In the finals, he cut three seconds off his preliminary time but finished as the runner-up. He finished the race in 4:50.13 seconds, just over 5 seconds behind the winner. Two other Panthers were also able to qualify for the finals in the event. Peyton Height finished in 22nd with a time of 5:40.36. Camden Tetenov was 24th in 6:08.86.

Three Panthers were also able to qualify in the 200-yard individual medley. Duncan Young, Nathan Ryan, and Eric Reynolds all made the finals for the event, with Young and Ryan in heat two, and Reynolds in heat 3. Duncan Young was the Panthers' best finisher in the event, taking 10th place with a time of 2:10.57. Nathan Ryan ut 5 seconds off his preliminary time to move up two spots and finish in 14th. He saw the finals race in 2:13.73. Reynolds was able to win heat three, finishing the event with a time of 2:19.40, good for 17th place.

Guilio Minerbi was the final Panther to qualify for the finals as an individual. He finished the 50-yard freestyle in 24.69 seconds, putting him in 22nd.

On night one of the competition, two relays were held, bookending the finals. The Panthers had two teams in each. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the top Panther team of Ryan, Young, Minerbi, and Young finished 11th with a time of 1:38.17. Finishing three spots behind them in 14th was the Panther relay of Dawson Mallery, Tetenov, Haight, and Reynolds. They finished in 1:43.87. Day one closed with the 400-yard medley relay. The Panthers once again took 11th and 13h. The team of D. Young, Reynolds, C. Young, and Minerbi finished in 11th with a time of 4:03.88. The second relay comprised of Haight, Tetenov, Ryan, and Mallery swam the race in 4:23.22.

Day two of the invitational begins with preliminary round races at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:00. Swimmers will compete in the 400-yard IM, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, and 100-yard backstroke.
