Panthers Submarined by Presidents

Washington, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford lost a tightly contested matchup at Washington and Jefferson on Sunday as they took on the Presidents in their final dual meet of the season. The Panthers outswam the Presidents but fell 141-125 after the hosts picked up 18 points in uncontested diving events.

Duncan Young won two events for the Panthers and just missed out on a third. He started his day with a win in the 200-yard freestyle, which he won with a time of 1:53.24, nearly four seconds ahead of the field. His second win came in the 500-yard freestyle. He posted a winning time of 5:17.97. His runner-up finish was in the much shorter 100-yard freestyle. Young was outtouched at the wall as his time of 51.77 seconds was only.02 seconds behind the winner.

Duncan's brother Conan also had a strong match with 2 wins and a runner-up. He started the event with a dominating win in the 1000-yard freestyle finishing 1 minute and 39 seconds ahead of the field with a time of 10:19.90. After a 21-event layoff he picked up his second win of the day in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.17 seconds. He had a much shorter wait before his next individual event as he came in 2nd in the 200-yard individual medley. His time was 2:06.18, 1.29 seconds off the pace.

Pitt-Bradford's final win came in the 100-yard backstroke from Sam Wright. Wright won the race by more than 10 seconds with a time of 58.41 seconds. He just missed out on a second victory in the 200-yard backstroke, where he finished .64 seconds behind the winner with a time of 2:08.25. Wright also had a close call in the 50-yard freestyle sprint, where he was 3rd in 24.97 seconds.

In addition to the Panthers that won other races, four Pitt-Bradford swimmers, and one relay earned additional 2nd place finishes. Owen Fitzsimmons had the first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:58.16. Brody Barto had the second in the polar opposite of the distance event, finishing as runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle. His time of 24.67 seconds was 1.43 seconds behind the winner. Eric Reynolds took second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.64, and Nathan Ryan was runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:38.77.

Finally, the Panthers closed the meet with a strong showing in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the medley relay. The team of Barto, Young, Young, and Wright was 2.77 seconds behind the winners with a time of 1:36.21 in the freestyle. In the medley, the Panthers were able to pick up 4 important points by successfully finishing the relay. Logan Giles started the race with the backstroke and was followed by Matt Gullotti in the breaststroke. Camden Tetenov swam the butterfly leg and Aiden Minch-Hick closed with the freestyle. Their time was 2:07.06.

In the final tabulation, the Panthers were able to outscore the Presidents in the swimming events 125-123. Unfortunately, the hosts picked up 18 points via two diving events, which the Panthers do not offer, ultimately securing the win for the Presidents.
