Conan Young Wins Mile with Meet Record, Panthers Finish in 7th

Webster, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's swimming team brought their 2022-23 season to a close in a thrilling manner at the Allegheny Empire Swimming Championships as freshman Conan Young was able to win the 1650-yard freestyle, setting a meet record time in the process.

Young started the final night of competition for the Panthers with a flash as he was able to cruise to the event victory in the 1650. Young eased to victory, setting the meet record with a time of 16:20.23, which was 24 seconds faster than the next competitor. His time also demolished the existing program record, setting the new Panther mark by over a minute. Young's finals event victory was the first for the Panthers since the joint championship meet began in the 2019-20 season.

Owen Fitzsimmons also competed in the event, finishing 16th with a time of 20:16.99. 

Pitt-Bradford swimmers were only able to qualify for one other individual event on the night. Sam Wright and Duncan Young both qualified for the 200-yard backstroke, with Wright finishing qualifying in 9th and Young in 12th. In the finals, Wright maintained his position, finishing 9th with a time of 2:01.96. Young improved by one spot, finishing in 11th with a time of 2:04.11. Both swimmers improved their time from their qualifying swims to their final performances.

Earlier in the day, three Panthers missed out on qualification for the finals. Camden Tetenov (23rd) and Aiden Minch-Hick (25th) swam in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing with times of 1:00.62 for Tetenov and 1:08.50 for Minch Hick. Connor Weiss also wrapped up his collegiate career, finishing 24th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:42.78.

The Panthers closed their season with a 7th-place finish in the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay. They finished with a time of 3:29.38. Wright started the race with a 51.63 second split and was followed by Fitzsimmons, who finished with a time of 55.65 seconds. Duncan Young swam the third leg in 52.18 seconds and Conan Young finished the race with a 49.92-second anchor leg. 

The Panthers finished the event in 7th place, tallying 267 points. They improved their final standings by one position from last season, while more than doubling their point total for the event. For the season, the Panthers finish with a 7-5-1 dual meet record, and their best championships finish in over five seasons, while also seeing some individual successes with Conan Young setting three new program records and winning the Panthers' first individual event victory at the third Allegheny Empire Swim championships.
