Panthers Upset Attempt Spoiled by 2nd Half Comeback

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's Basketball team put AMCC leading LaRoche on edge Wednesday night, holding a double-digit lead through most of the first half. Despite the strong start, the Panthers fell victim to a strong second-half shooting performance by the Redhawks, allowing them to come away with the 80-67 victory.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers jumped out to a quick lead on LaRoche, as they were able to hold them without a field goal for the opening 3:30 of play. On the offensive side of the ball, Alex Rodriguez started the game with a three from the wing on the Panthers' first possession, and Alex Breindel quickly doubled the lead after a quick defensive stop. Daniel Lynch would force a timeout 45 seconds later after stealing the ball and racing down court for a fast break lay-up.
  • The Panthers tacked onto their lead in the following minutes as Dylan Meyer made two baskets inside around a layup from Breindel.
  • Pitt-Bradford went on to push their lead to 16, the largest it would be, on the strength of 10 unanswered points. Lynch made a layup inside on a feed from Meyer to start the rally and two possessions later Meyer found Breindel for another three. After nearly 3 minutes of scoreless action by both teams, Meter made a layup inside and Nick Carmichael forced another Redhawk timeout with a three from the wing.
  • LaRoche was able to whittle away at the deficit, moving it to 7 points with just over a minute left in the half, but the Panthers were able to score 6 from the free throw line in the final minute to take a 13-point lead to the break.
  • After halftime, the Redhawks offense awoke, hitting 6 threes in the opening 6 minutes of the 2nd to eventually take a 46-43 lead with 14 to go.
  • With the Panthers down 6 with a little over 11 minutes to go in the game, Parker hit a big three from the wing to cut the lead in half. On the following possession, Carmichael took a nice feed from Deondre Terwilliger and hit a mid-range jumper to put Pitt-Bradford down 1. The Redhawks were able to respond with yet another three, but Parker came right back and hit a three coming off a ball screen to nullify the Redhawk three-ball.
  • Parker made another huge play with 7:17 to go as he drove to the basket down 5. He fought through a foul to make a driving layup and completed the three-point play to move Pitt-Bradford within one possession of LaRoche.
  • Down 4 with 6 minutes to go, Daniel Lynch made a final push for the PAnthers, making baskets on two straight possessions to tie the game at 62.
  • The Redhawks quickly retook the advantage and following a string of Pitt-Bradford misses, was able to put the game away from the free throw line.

Leaders:

  • The Panthers had 4 players finish in double figures, with two freshmen setting career highs.
  • Miles Parker scored all 16 of his points in the second half as the Panthers tried to keep pace with the Redhawks. He made 5 of 8 from the field, including 2 of 4 from three and made all four free throws he attempted. The mark was a new career-high for Parker.
  • Daniel Lynch also set a career-high with 16 points. HE finished 7-17 from the field. He also grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and recorded 3 steals.
  • Dylan Meyer finished in double figures for the 4th game running. He scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting. He grabbed 4 rebounds and recorded 2 assists and a block.
  • Finally, Alex Breindel also finished in double digits with 10 points. He made 3 of 4 shots and 2 of 3 from deep.
  • The Panthers only attempted 10 free throws, but made them count, hitting all of them.

The tough loss moves the Panthers to 1-15 on the season and 0-11 in conference play. They will look to build on the momentum of this game as they travel to Alfred State for their mid-week contest. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
