Panthers Stop Skid, Beat Penn State-DuBois

DuBois, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's baseball team was able to break a 5 game losing streak on Wednesday evening as they defeated Penn State-DuBois 7-6.

  •  The Panthers took an immediate lead as they scored a run in the first. Tyler Aires hit a one-out home run, his 2nd of the season. Kyler Majka started for the Panthers and quickly set down the Lions in order to end the first with a 1-0 lead.
  • Both teams were unable to score in the second and after the Panthers stranded a runner in the 3rd, the Lions tied the game at 1 with a one-out home run of their own. After the blast, Majka allowed the next two runners to reach on a single and a walk but retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
  • In the 4th, both the Panthers and Lions squandered leadoff runners to keep the game tied at 1. Pitt-Bradford broke the tie in the 5th as Noah Meyers hit a leadoff home run. It was his team-leading 3rd long ball of the year.
  • After Majka recorded a shutdown inning with the help of a 6-4-3 double play, the Panthers continued building momentum in the 6th as they tacked on 3 runs. Evan Fragela was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved all the way to third on a balk and ground out. Justin Dattoli brought him in on a single to put the Panthers up 2. David Gebhard singled and moved to second base before Meyers came through again with a 2-out 2-run single.
  • Majka kept the lions off the board in the 6th and 7th, allowing 2 runners to reach in the 6th before setting the hosts down in order in the 7th.
  • In the 8th, the Panthers scored 2 more runs on two clutch 2-out hits. David Gebhard singled with one down and moved to second as Noah Meyers struck out. Maxwell Rogers delivered a two-out double and then scored the Panthers' 7th run on a Nico Hall single.
  • Majka started the bottom half of the inning but was replaced after allowing a walk and single to start the frame. He was replaced by Shawn Mannering who walked the first batter he faced before getting the first out of the inning on strikes. Mannering then allowed a bases-clearing double and a single as the Lions cut the lead to just two. He was able to avoid further damage as he got another strikeout and a grounder to end the frame.
  • The Panthers were unable to add to their lead in the top of the 9th as Dattoli was left on second after a two-out double.
  • Trent Bielak entered in the 9th and quickly found trouble as he walked and hit the first two batters of the inning. After a strikeout, Bielak hit a second batter to load the bases. One run scored on a sacrifice fly to right before Bielak induced a ground ball to third to end the game.

Kyler Majka (3-1) picked up the win after allowing 3 earned runs in 7+ innings pitched. He struck out 5. Trent Bielak picked up his first career save after allowing 1 run in an inning pitched. He struck out 1. Shawn Mannering struck out 2 in an inning pitched.

Noah Meyers finished the game 2 for 4 with his third home run of the season to go along with a run scored and 3 runs batted in. Justin Dattoli went 3-5 with a run scored and an RBI. David Gebhard and Maxwell Rogers both recorded multi-hit games while Tyler Aires hit his second home run of the season.

The win moves the Panthers to 7-11 on the season. They are scheduled to kick off their AMCC schedule this weekend when they head to Erie to take on Penn State-Behrend. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 and 4 on Saturday.
