Panthers Force Game 3 with Comeback Victory

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team forced a deciding game three in the quarterfinal round of the AMCC Baseball Championship Tournament after splitting a pair of games on the first two games. The Panthers were no-hit in a 6-0 game one loss but came back to win 5-4 in the nightcap.

Game 1:

  • The Panther offense was unable to put a blemish on Penn State Behrend ace Thomas Zbeznski's day. The lefty threw the 3rd no-hitter in Penn State-Behrend program history.
  • Despite not getting a hit, the Panthers were able to threaten to score twice. In the opening frame, Nick Stein was hit by a pitch to begin the game. He moved into scoring position on a Nico Hall sacrifice bunt but was unable to score as Sam Dreistadt struck out and Jake McNabb flew out to deep center field to end the inning.
  • Pitt-Bradford starting pitcher Alex Miles kept the Lions off the board for the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third. The Lions were able to score two runs on just one hit, a bunt single. The rally started with an error in the infield, and then three hit batters allowed the first run of the game to score. This was followed by a passed ball that saw the second run score. Miles was able to settle down, getting a pop-up to second and a fly ball to center to end the inning.
  • The Panthers looked poised to cut into the lead in the next inning. Dreistadt was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and he quickly stole second. He moved to third when McNabb hit a fly ball to foul territory in right field. He was unable to advance the final 90 feet, as Evan Fragela was set down looking and Matt Hair flew out to left field.
  • The Lions used Zbezinski's escape to continue building momentum, as they scored 3 in the 4th. Miles got the leadoff batter to fly out to left field, but then saw the bases loaded as he walked a batter, allowed a single, and then hit a batter. Lion third baseman Josh Wagner came up with the big hit, doubling down the left-field line to clear the bases and put Penn State-Behrend up 5-0.
  • Miles was replaced by Kyler Majka in the 5th. Majka found himself in trouble quickly, as he hit the first batter he faced and walked the next. Following a sacrifice bunt, Majka hit a second batter to load the bases. He was able to get a groundout that scored the 6th run of the game but got a pop-up in foul territory to escape the inning without further damage.
  • Zbezinski retired 10 of the final 12 batters in a row, but after Fragela was hit by a pitch in the 7th, he induced a game-ending double play.
  • Miles (1-2) took the loss after allowing 5 earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. He struck out one batter.
  • Majka pitched the final two innings for the Panthers, allowing 1 earned run without allowing a hit. He also struck out one batter.
  • Dreistadt, Fragela, Stein and Tyler Aires all reached base on free passes. Dreistadt did grab a stolen base in the 4th.

Game 2:

  • Despite being no-hit in the opener, the Panthers were able to move on from the result in game one, and get off to a hot start in the nightcap. Tyler Aires broke the ice in the top of the first, driving a double off the wall in left with one out. Dreistadt followed that with a walk, but a double play saw the inning end scoreless.
  • Reid Tarnowski started the game on the mound for the Panthers and was able to get his team back into the dugout with a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first.
  • Pitt-Bradford rewarded Tarnowski by scoring three runs in the 2nd. Matt Hair led off with a walk and then moved to second when Matt LaBadie was hit by a pitch. Evan Fragela dropped a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up and Hair was able to score when Jayson Hayes grounded out to shortstop.
  • With two outs, Kevin Rehak singled back up the middle to bring LaBadie home and moved to second base on the throw to the plate. The Panthers took advantage of Rehak's heads-up baserunning, as Nico Hall dropped a single into center field to drive in Rehak and increase the advantage to 3.
  • The Lions were able to break the ice on Tarnowski in the 3rd, using 2 hits and a hit batter to score the first run. Following a scoreless 4th, the Lions added two more runs to tie the game in the 5th. Tarnowski struck out the leadoff batter, but the final strike got away from McNabb, allowing the batter to move all the way to second. Behrend took advantage of the Panther mistake immediately as the next batter tripled to center and then scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
  • The Lions were able to move ahead of the Panthers in the 7th. They tagged Tarnowksi with a fourth run using back-to-back two-out doubles.
  • The lead did not last long, as the Panthers tied the game in the top of the 8th. Aires led off the inning by beating out an infield single. Sam Dreistadt reached on a fielder's choice and then moved all the way to third base when Jake McNabb hit a single that bounced off of the pitcher and into right field. He was able to score on a Matt Hair ground out to the right side of the infield.
  • Alex Fetter replaced Tarnowski in the 8th inning. He made quick work of the Lions in his first inning, inducing a ground out to second and striking out two batters to send the game to its final inning tied at 4.
  • In the 9th, Evan Fragela led off the inning by lining a single into left field. Following a strikeout and fly ball to center field, He advanced two bases to third on a wild pitch. Then Hall came through with another huge hit, this time hitting a single to left which brought Fragela in as the go-ahead run.
  • The bottom of the inning was not as easy for Fetter as he looked to close the game and extend the season. The Lions got a runner in scoring position immediately, as the lead-off batter hit a double down the right-field line.
  • Fetter retired the next batter on a pop-up to second but saw the go-ahead run reach base on a walk. Fetter got some help with one out and two on, as Tyler Aires was able to snag a line drive in left field and hold the runners.
  • After the Aires catch, Fetter was able to get the final out of the game on a grounder to short, forcing game three.
  • Reid Tarnowski received a no-decision after a strong start in the must-win contest. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 7 innings pitched. He struck out 6 batters and allowed only one free pass on a hit batter.
  • Fetter (2-3) picked up the win after two scoreless innings in relief. He gave up one hit and allowed a walk while striking out two.
  • Nico Hall was the offensive star of the game, finishing 2 for 5 with two RBI singles.
  • Tyler Aires also went 2 for 5, while Jayson Hayes picked up a multi-hit game with a 2 for 4 performance.
  • Sam Dreistadt was able to reach base on all four plate appearances. He went 1 for 2 with 2 walks and reached on a fielder's choice.

The Panthers' (6-14) upset victory in game two has forced a series-deciding third game against the second-seeded Lions. The teams will face off for the 7th and final time this season on Monday, May 10th. Penn State-Behrend will host the Panthers for the game, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The winner will take on Mount Aloysius in the semi-final round, beginning Thursday.
