Panthers Fall Twice to Penn State-Altoona

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford struggled in their conference doubleheader against Penn State-Altoona. They fell in the opener 6-1 and lost the second game 17-7.

Game 1:

  • The Panthers got off to a quick start in the opener, but lost momentum early and were never able to regain it. Nick Stein led off the game with a single to left. Tyler Aires was hit by a pitch, and both runners moved over after a sacrifice bunt by Sam Dreistadt. Kevin Rehak brought in the run, grounding out to 3rd base as Stein scored.
  • Penn State-Altoona responded immediately on starting pitcher Reid Tarnowski. The Lions started their inning with a leadoff double and quickly tied the game on another double following a sacrifice bunt. Tarnowski struck out the next batter but saw the inning continue on an error. The mistake would prove costly as the next batter singled through the right side to bring in the second run.
  • The Lion's lead expanded in the second. The Lions loaded the bases with one out and scored the third run on a sacrifice fly. Penn State-Altoona then cleared the bases with a 2 run triple and completed their scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Tarnowski settled down after the tough 2nd inning. He retired the next 12 batters in a row, not allowing another Lion to reach fo the final 4 innings of the game.
  • The Panthers' offense was never able to get rolling in the game. They recorded hits in four different innings but were never able to string any together to score. Matt Hair was the only player to get to second base for the final five innings, as he hit a two-out double in the 6th.
  • Tarnowski (0-3) took the loss despite the strong finish. his final line read 6 innings pitched, allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, on 7 hits and a walk. He struck out 7 Lions.
  • Nick Stein was the only Panther to record a multihit game. He finished 2 for 4 and scored the Panthers' only run.
  • Sam Dreistadt and Matt Hair were the only other Panthers to record hits. Dreistadt had a single in the third and Hair had a double in the 6th.
  • Kevin Rehak went 0-3 but brought home the lone Panther run.

Game 2:

  • The second game of the day saw the Panthers try to keep up with the Lions' strong offensive performance but lost steam late in the game.
  • Penn State Altoona was able to jump ahead with a run in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd. They used a solo home run and a two-out rally to score the runs of starting pitcher Alex Fetter.
  • The Panthers did respond in the 4th, scoring 5 runs to take a lead. They quickly loaded the bases to begin the inning, using two free passes and a bunt single by Bret Babcock. Rehak picked up the first RBI again, this time getting hit by a pitch to force in the first run.
  • Following a pitching change, the Panthers used three straight hits to score the next 4 runs. Nick Stein ripped a single down the right-field line to bring 2 runs home. Nico Hall followed this with an RBI single to left-center, and Sam Dreistadt finished the scoring with a single through the right side.
  • The Panther lead did not last, however, as the Lions scored 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.
  • Matt LaBadie tied the game back up in the 5th. he hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. It is his third home run against the Lions, as he hit two in the Panthers' win over Penn State-Altoona in the season opener.
  • Penn State-Altoona regained the advantage in the bottom of the 5th. They chased Fetter with a walk and 2 straight hits in the inning. Hector Vargas entered the game with runners on first and second and no outs. After a balk moved the runners to second and third, he was almost able to get out of the inning with no further damage. With two outs, he struck out a batter, but the ball got away from the catcher, allowing a run to score.
  • The Lions added 2 runs in the 6th on a home run off of Vargas. They blew the game open in the 7th, scoring 7 runs on 7 hits off of Matt Gullotti, who entered the game at the start of the frame.
  • The Panthers were able to get one run back in the 9th. Dreistadt led off with a double to the gap in left-center and scored a batter later when pinch hitter Noah Meyers doubled to right-center.
