Panthers Split Doubleheader at Hilbert

Panthers Split Doubleheader at Hilbert

Gowanda, N.Y. - The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team played two tight contests in their AMCC doubleheader at Hilbert on Tuesday. They were able to hold on and win the first game 7-5 but fell in extra innings in the nightcap by a score of 4-3.

Game 1:

  • The Panthers got on the board in a hurry, as they scored two runs in the opening frame. Nick Stein led off with a double to right and was able to score 2 batters later on a Sam Dreistadt RBI groundout.
  • The Panthers were then able to load the bases and bring in a second run when three straight batters were hit by a pitch. Bret Babcock was the third and final Pitt-Bradford Batter to be hit and picked up an RBI.
  • Hilbert was able to get a run back without picking up a hit on starting pitcher Kyler Majka, but the Panthers added to their lead immediately in the second.
  • Nico Hall was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Following two flyouts, Dreistadt came up big again, this time drilling a two-run home run over the right-field fence. The blast was Dreistadt's 2nd of the year.
  • Majka shut down the Hawks in the second but saw his lead trimmed to 1 run in the 3rd. Hilbert scored 2 runs on hits in the inning to cut into the Panther lead.
  • Pitt-Bradford pushed their advantage back to 4 runs in the 5th inning. They loaded the bases using two walks and a hit by pitch, and Evan Fragela brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly to center field. With two outs, Babcock lined a single into left to bring in two more and put the panthers up 7-5.
  • Hilbert was able to chase Majka in the 6th when they strung together three 2-out hits, including 2 doubles to trim the lead to 2.
  • Ben Mulhall entered in relief and was able to get an out on one pitch to limit the damage. Mulhall returned to the mound for the 7th and made quick work of the Hawks to end the game.
  • Kyler Majka picked up his first win in a Panther uniform in the contest. he allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, over 5, and 2/3 innings. He gave up 9 hits and struck out 5.
  • Mulhall shut the door on Hilbert effectively, picking up his first career save. He allowed only one walk in 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
  • Sam Dreistadt was once again the offensive star for the Panthers, finishing 2 for 3. He hit a home run, double, scored 2 runs, and drove in 3.

Game 2:

  • The second game got off to a much slower start, as pitching was dominant for both sides. Alex Miles started the game for the Panthers and was able to strand runners on base in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the third, the Panthers were able to push two runs across using a walk, error, balk, and a base hit.
  • Andrew Bokulich drew a leadoff walk and then moved to second when Jake McNabb reached on an error. The runners moved up a base when Hilbert pitcher Zachary Crane balked.
  • The mistakes came back to hurt the Hawks, as Dreistadt came up with another big two-out hit, singling to right field to bring both runners into score.
  • The lead did not last long, however, as Hilbert quickly scored 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. They used 4 hits, including 2 doubles to score the runs. The inning could have included more runs, but the Panthers turned a double play to end the frame.
  • Miles stepped things up after the three-run inning, holding the Hilbert bats in check until the Panthers could tie the game. Miles retired 12 straight batters in a four-inning stretch.
  • The Panthers got some help as the Hawks committed two errors in the 7th, allowing the Panthers to score and tie the game at three.
  • Evan Fragela led off the inning by beating out an infield single. He moved to second on a Hilbert error and following a picked-off runner and grounder to short, scored when Hilbert committed a second error on a Nico Hall grounder.
  • Back on the hill with a tie game, Miles found himself in a jam in the 8th but was able to escape trouble. The first two batters of the inning reached on a single and double. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Miles was able to induce a grounder back to the mound that allowed him to check the runners and throw out the batter for the first out.
  • Miles hit the next batter with a pitch to load the bases but was able to induce a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning with the game still tied.
  • Miles put in a quick 9th inning to round out his outing, retiring the Hawks in order.
  • In the extra frame, the Panthers were unable to get anything started in their half of the inning.
  • Matt Gullotti entered the game and saw two batters reach on back-to-back singles. He retired one batter on a sacrifice bunt and following an intentional walk, got the next batter to pop up in the infield.
  • The Panthers' pitching staff would run out of escapes, however, as Gullotti uncorked a wild pitch to the next batter that saw the winning run score and end the contest.
  • Miles picked up a no-decision despite throwing 9 innings, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 7 hits. He struck out 6 batters.
  • Gullotti (0-1) picked up the loss allowing the single run on 2 hits, a walk, and a wild pitch in 2/3 of an inning.
  • Dreistadt finished the game 1-4 and drove in 2 runs. For the day, he finished with 3 hits and 5 RBIs.
  • Kevin Rehak, Evan Fragela, and Nick Stein picked u the other hits for the Panthers.

With the split, the Panthers' record moves to 3-7 overall with a 2-6 record in AMCC Conference Play. They will return to action on Saturday, April 17th, when they take on Penn State-Altoona.
