Panthers Unable to Finish Comebacks, Swept By Alfred State

Bradford, Pa. -- Two late comeback attempts from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Baseball team came up short on Saturday, as the Panthers were swept on the road at Alfred State. They lost the first game 4-1 and the second 13-8.

Game 1:

  • Reid Tarnowski started the first game of the day for the Panthers and put in another solid performance early in the game. He allowed the first run of the game in the 2nd inning. After a leadoff walk, runners moved to second and third on a single to left and a sacrifice bunt. Tarnowski go the next batter to line out for a sacrifice fly but was able to get the third out of the inning with a strikeout before more damage could be done. 
  • Tarnowski ran into more trouble in the 4th. The leadoff batter in the inning doubled to left and then following a walk, both batters stole bases to again put runners on 2nd and 3rd with less than two outs. The second run of the game came home on a fielder's choice. The next batter was able to single to left and then the final run scored on a sacrifice bunt. 
  • Tarnowski was able to come back from the three-run inning, keeping the Pioneers off the board in the 5th and 6th to give his offense a chance to tie or win the game. 
  • The Panthers were unable to string anything together until the 7th inning. Nico Hall led off the inning by drawing a walk. The next two batters struck out swinging, but Nick Stein and Jake McNabb each drew two-out walks to bring the tying run to the plate in Sam Dreistadt.
  • Dreistadt was able to keep the inning alive by beating out an infield single to score a run, but the Panthers could go no further as the next batter struck out swinging to end the game.
  • Tarnowski (0-2) pitched all six innings for the Panthers, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 6.
  • Dreistadt went 2 for 4 in the game and brought home the Panthers' only run of the contest.
  • Matt Hair also notched a multi-hit game, going 2 for 2 with two singles. he also drew a walk.

Game 2:

  • The second game of the day was a much tighter affair which saw momentum teeter to each side throughout the game.  
  • Alfred State jumped on the Panthers early, scoring a run in the first off of starting pitcher Alex Fetter using two hits and a sacrifice bunt.
  • Despite being behind early, the Panthers were able to take a lead in the 3rd when they exploded for 4 runs. 
  • Andrew Bokulich beat out an infield single and scored right away as fellow freshman outfielder Nico Hall drilled an RBI triple to center. He scored 3 batters later when Dreistadt hit a sacrifice fly to left.
  • Kevin Rehak added to the lead after the sac fly, doubling the other way to the right field. He scored on a Matt Hair single to center. 
  • The Pioneers were able to come back in the 4th, using 4 hits to tie the game. After a shutdown inning, they retook the lead, chasing Fetter after two walks and a lineout. New pitcher Ben Suter loaded the bases by hitting a batter. Alfred State regained the lead on a wild pitch, and then two more runs scored on a single down the right-field line.
  • Pitt-Bradford's freshmen stepped up again in the 5th, resiliently cutting the lead back to 1. Evan Fragela led off with a single up the middle and moved to second when Bokulich did the same a batter later. Both runners moved up on a balk and then scored when hall dropped a single into right field.
  • The teams traded runs in the bottom of the 6th and top of the 7th, keeping the Pioneer lead at 1. Alfred State used a double and a wild pitch to score their run, while the Panthers used a big two-out hit. Sam Dreistadt led off the inning with a couple to the gap in right-center and scored when Bret Babcock was able to single up the middle.
  • Alfred State chased Suter in the bottom of the 7th, as they scored a run on a single and two free passes. Ben Mulhall entered the game and got the first batter out, but allowed a run to score on the sacrifice fly.
  • Mulhall hit another batter to reload the bases and then allowed a single to left to score two more. The Panthers were able to end the inning on the same play, however, as Hall was able to throw out a runner rat third base for the final out.
  • The Pioneers tacked on one final run in the 8th. Mulhall walked the second batter of the inning, and after two stolen bases, the runner scored on a single to left.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to scratch across a final run in the top of the 9th. Fragela and Babcock were each hit by a pitch with one out and then pinch hitter David Gebhard reached on an error, which allowed Fragela to score.
  • Fetter (0-2) picked up the loss in the game. he allowed 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings of work. He walked 4 batters, gave up 6 hits and struck out 2.
  • Suter also allowed 6 runs on 4 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings pitched. 
  • Mulhall pitched the final 1 and 2/3, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a walk. He struck out 1 Pioneer. 
  • 5 different Panthers collected multi-hit games in the nightcap.
  • Nico Hall went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored.
  • Andrew Bokulich also went 2 for 4, scoring 2 runs for the Panthers
  • Evan Fragela reached base 4 times, as he collected 2 hits, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 runs.
  • Kevin Rehak went 2 for 5 in the game with the RBI double. He also scored a run.
  • Sam Dreistadt finished 2-4 with a run, an RBI, and a double.

The Panthers are now 2-6 on the season and have a 1-5 record in AMCC play. They will get a chance to return to the win column on Tuesday, as they head to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Hilbert. Game 1 is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
