Panthers Offense Explodes in Game 2 to Earn Split with Penn State-Behrend

Bradford, Pa.--After falling in the opening game of their doubleheader, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team exploded for 13 runs in the nightcap to earn a split with Penn State-Behrend.

The Panthers lost the first game 7-0 but came back to win the second 13-2.

Game 1-

  • The Panthers sputtered in game 1, as they faced a tough matchup with Behrend righty Derrick Shields, who leads the AMCC in wins with 3. Shields held a no-hitter against the Panthers through 4 as he stuck out 8 batters along the way to a 3-hit shutout.
  • Kyler Majka started the game for the Panthers, and got off to a good start, as he held the Lions scoreless through three. Things fell apart for Majka in the 4th, as he allowed a leadoff double and two walks to load the bases with one out. Majka walked in a run and then saw two more score on an error on a fielder's choice.
  • Ben Suter entered the game after the error and was able to escape the jam without further harm.
  • Suter struck out the side in the 5th, but ran into trouble and was chased from the game in the 6th. Following a leadoff home run, Suter induced a ground ball but hit three straight batters to load the bases. A 4th run scored on a wild pitch and then the Lions pushed the lead to 6 with a 2-run single.
  • Matt Gullotti entered the game after the single and escaped the inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly and help from catcher Jake McNabb who threw out a baserunner to end the 6th.
  • Gullotti allowed three hits to load the bases in the 7th but got a pop-up and a strikeout to wriggle out of trouble.
  • The Panthers were only able to muster 3 hits in the contest and never were able to advance a runner to second. Matt Hair broke through with a single through the left side of the infield in the 5th, but was caught stealing two batters later. Kevin Rehak and Sam Dreistadt each hit one-out singles in the 6th and 7th, but quickly were erased on inning-ending double plays.
  • Majka (0-2) took the loss after allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 1/3 inning. He struck out two batters.
  • Suter allowed 4 runs on 2 hits and struck out 3.
  • Gillotti allowed 0 runs on 3 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Game 2-

  • Game 2 got off to a much better start for Pitt-Bradford as they jumped on the Lions in the first. They used three straight two-out hits to score in the first inning. Dreistadt and Evan Fragela each singled and then Matt Hair came up with a big double down the left-field line to bring in Dreistadt.
  • Starting pitcher Alex Miles took over from there. Miles held the Lions scoreless in 7 innings of work, allowing only 5 hits.
  • Pitt-Bradford added to the lead in the third. Jake McNabb reached base on an error and then scored a batter later when Dreistadt drilled a triple off the fence in dead center.
  • Miles continued to shut down the Lions and was rewarded in the 5th after getting out of a tough bases-loaded jam in the top half of the inning. Nick Stein led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left and then Dreistadt came up with the big hit again, this time tattooing a home run that sailed over the right-field fence and landed in the parking lot to double the lead.
  • Following the home run, Miles came out in the 6th and walked the leadoff batter, but got 3 quick fly balls to get his team back in the dugout and up to the plate.
  • The Panthers kept pushing momentum, scoring 5 more runs in the 6th. They put runners on second and third after two walks and wild pitches and then Kevin Rehak singled to right to bring in Nico Hall
  • Pitt-Bradford once again found the bases loaded after a walk and JakeMcNabb singled in 2 runs and took second on the throw. A batter later, Evan Fragela looped a single into right-center to bring in to more and put the Panthers up 9-0.
  • Miles came back out for the 7th and allowed two runners to reach, but got a pop-up in foul territory to end the inning and his outing.
  • The Panthers scored 4 more runs in the bottom of the 7th, using the long ball to great effect. A lead-off walk by Matt LaBadie and single from hall preceded a big home run from Rehak who crushed his first home run of the year over the left-field fence. Following a strikeout, McNabb struck next, hitting his own home run to deep left field.
  • Ben Mulhall entered in the 8th inning and struggled to find the zone, allowing 2 runs in the inning without giving up a hit. He came back strong to close out the 9th striking out two batters to end the contest.
  • Miles (1-0) picks up the win in his first action of the year. He allowed 5 hits in 7 shutout innings. He struck out 6 batters.
  • Mulhall allowed 2 runs in 2 innings of work on 1 hit and 4 walks. He struck out 3 lions.

  • McNabb went 2 for 5 with the home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored 3 more.
  • Kevin Rehak also went 2-5 with a home run. He drove in 4 and scored 2.
