Panthers Cap 2019 Season With Sweep At Medaille

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team closed out its 2019 season Tuesday with a road Allegheny Mountian Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Medaille.

Pitt-Bradford (16-14, 9-9 AMCC) took game one in comeback fashion 5-4 before putting together an offensive explosion to take game two 14-3.

"Fun to watch the guys go out and sweep on the road," Head Coach Zach Foster said. "Game one, they battled with their backs against the wall and grinded the win out. Game two, it was great to see our bats come alive. I'm proud of our guys"

In the second game, Austin Parent and Matt Hair knocked four hits each, including two doubles from Parent and a solo homer from Hair.

Tyler Hoops, Samuel Dreistadt and Sawyer Packard had three hits each as well to back a strong outing from Alex Miles on the mound.

In game one, Pitt-Bradford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Jake McNabb and Parent came into score on a Medaille error.

The Mavericks tied it with a two-run single in the bottom half, though.

Both teams traded zeroes until a two-run homer gave the Mavericks a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Pitt-Bradford rallied in their final inning.

Hoops hammered a double that scored Packard, then Kevin Rehak scored Jason Lucarelli with a sacrifice fly.

With two down, Parent put the Panthers on top as he lined a double that scored Hoops.

Ben Suter and Nate Renick came on in relief and secured the win for the Panthers

Pitt-Bradford's 21 hits are the team's most in a single game this season and the highest total since the Panthers dropped in 26 against Bluffton on March 6 last season.

The in game two, an RBI single from Hair, RBI double from Dreistadt and sacrifice fly from Packard in the second inning erased a 1-0 lead and put Pitt-Bradford on top 3-1.

Pitt-Bradford then added two more runs -- one apiece in the third and fourth innings -- on a McNabb RBI single and a Packard run.

Then in the fifth, Hair hammered his third homer of the season to give the Panthers a 6-1 lead.

The Panthers kept the offense going with three more in the sixth on RBIs from McNabb, Rehak and Dreistadt, then brought their run total to double-digits when Robert Sawicki scored on a Rehak sacrifice fly in the seventh.

After Medaille got one back in the bottom of the seventh, Lucarelli scored Dreistadt on a sacrifice fly in the eighth, then in the ninth, Hair singled home Parent, McNabb scored on an error and Drake Renn scored on a wild pitch to round out the Panther scoring.

On the mound, Miles went tossed six innings and struck out three before handing the ball to Alex Andrzejewski for the last three innings.

Andrzejewski earned the save, striking out five and allowing just one hit.

Monday's action concluded the 2019 season for Pitt-Bradford.

For seniors Austin Parent and Benjamin Hayes, it ends their tenure as Pitt-Bradford student-athletes.

The 2018 AMCC Player of the Year and First Team All-American Parent finished with a .384 career batting average, 172 career hits, 18 career homers and 115 career RBIs.

A valuable member of the Pitt-Bradford bullpen, Hayes made 28 career appearances and struck out 30 opposing batters in 58 total innings. He finished with a career 4.66 strikeout per nine innings average.
