HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Houghton Monday evening.

"Tough couple games," Head Coach Zach Foster said. "The guys had a quick turnaround and you could tell they were sluggish. Too many defensive miscues kept our pitchers on the field longer and led to big innings. I take the blame for these ones. We will get back to work tomorrow."

Game One: Houghton 10, Pitt-Bradford 0

Houghton scored its runs in bunches, plating four runs in the second inning and six in the sixth inning.

The Highlanders earned just four hits in the contest and capitalized on six defensive errors by the Panthers.

Pitt-Bradford scattered three hits – one apiece from Tyler Hoops, Robert Sawicki and Colin Buckwalter.

The Panthers worked three walks as well but all eight runners that reached were left stranded.

Alex Andrzejewski started on the mound for the Panthers and through 5.2 of the seven-inning game. He struck out six batters and four of the 10 runs allowed went down as earned.

Sam Gwiazdinski got the final out necessary for the Panthers on the mound.

Game Two: Houghton 17, Pitt-Bradford 5

Houghton got off to a strong start offensively with three runs in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on three hits and a lead-off walk.

But Pitt-Bradford got two of the runs back in the second as Brody Wood, Samuel Dreistadt and Jason Lucarelli walked to load the bases with two away.

Hoops and Sawyer Packard were then both hit by pitches back-to-back, scoring Wood and Dreistadt.

Pitt-Bradford later tied the game up in the third. Dalton Renn led off the inning with a single, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Tim Brown and advanced to third on a single from Wood. 

He later scored as the Houghton pitcher balked.

But the Highlanders erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third. Three of the five hits in the inning went for extra bases as the Highlanders took a 9-3 advantage.

The Panthers got two back in the fourth as Austin Parent delivered a two-run single that scored Packard and Hoops.

Houghton later scored on a triple and a single in the bottom of the fourth, though, to get the runs back. 

The Highlanders added four more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to round out their 17 runs.

Pitt-Bradford worked five base hits, one apiece from Hoops, Parent, Dalton Renn, Wood and Joshua Zelinski.

Hoops and Packard each stole a base.

As a team, the Panthers worked 12 walks while Pitt-Bradford pitching walked half that total.

The Panthers left 11 runners on base.

Nate Renick started on the mound for the Panthers and went 2.2 innings before being relieved by Benjamin Hayes. Drake Renn threw the final two innings for the Panthers. 

Pitt-Bradford will play its first conference games of the season Saturday at Mount Aloysius.
