GREENSBURG, PA – The Pitt-Bradford baseball team faced off against Pitt-Greensburg in the first round of the AMCC Tournament with the Bobcats sweeping the series, 11-9 and 16-0.
Pitt-Bradford was led by senior Connor Borowski (Bradford/Bradford) who went 2-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Borowski also hit his eighth home run of the season which broke the previous Pitt-Bradford single season home run record of seven.
Pitt-Greensburg struck first in the bottom of the first after the Panthers walked the bases loaded and then hit a batter to bring the first run of the game.
The Panthers tied it up in the top of the second after sophomore Matt Sompel (Scranton/Scranton) drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 1-1.
A few walks and some timely hits by the Bobcats allowed them to put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead, 5-1.
Senior Kody Johnston (Homerville, GA/Clinch County) got one back for the Panthers on an RBI double to cut the lead to 5-2 after the third inning.
The game got interesting in the top of the fifth with the Panthers trailing 6-2. The Panthers led the inning off with a freshman Dalton Renn (Hallam/Eastern York) home run and a few batters later, Borowski hit a towering three-run home run to give the Panthers a 7-6 lead.
The lead changed back in favor to of the Bobcats in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back RBIs gave Pitt-Greensburg an 8-7 lead.
However, the Panthers would strike back and reclaim the lead scoring two of their own after RBIs from junior Bobby Sorokas (Plains/Coughlin) and a suicide squeeze by freshman Jay Clinger (Edinboro/Northwestern) to lead 9-8.
The Bobcats responded with a three-run inning and went on to hold off the Panthers' offense as they took game one, 11-9.
Game two was a one-sided affair from start to finish. The Bobcats exploded with 10 runs through the first four innings as everything the Bobcats hit found a crease in the Panthers defense.
Pitt-Greensburg kept their foot on the gas as they continued to produce runs throughout the contest as they outhit the Panthers 18-4.
The Panthers fell in both games to a tough Pitt-Greensburg squad as they lost game two, 16-0.
Pitt-Bradford head coach Bret Butler said, "As much as our record doesn't show it, I enjoyed this team so much. They never quit. They love baseball. They love working. They love competing. It was a joy to coach this group, and I am so proud of every senior in particular. Kudos to Connor Borowski as well, for setting the single-season home run record. For all the setbacks and rotten luck this team had, they never, ever gave up."
Pitt-Bradford is eliminated from the AMCC Tournament but will travel to Alfred State for a double header on May 3 at 2 p.m.
