Finch, Panthers, Cruise to 3-1 Victory at Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's volleyball team used a relentless offensive attack in three of the four sets they played, capturing a 3-1 victory on Saturday morning at Alfred University.

"It was really nice to come out here and get a victory," said Pitt-Bradford head volleyball coach Tom Roof. "We did a lot of good things today and I thought our offense was great. We were really hitting well from all angles."

Mandy Finch led the Panthers with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Christina Rauh added 39 assists, 19 digs and nine kills. Kaitlin McCann chipped in with nine kills and two blocks, and Alexis Dhayer finished with nine kills and 14 digs.

The Panthers got out to a quick start in the first set, taking a 7-0 lead, forcing an Alfred timeout. The Saxons battled back, but Pitt-Bradford's floor shattering kills proved to be too much to handle for the Alfred defense. Finch finished the game with a vicious kill from the far side of the court to give the Panthers a 25-19 victory in the opening set.

Like Pitt-Bradford in the first set, Alfred got out to a fast start in the second set, taking a 6-2 lead, prompting a Panther's timeout. Pitt-Bradford got it together out of the timeout and eventually took a 15-14 lead and never gave it back, as the Panthers hung on for a 25-20 victory in the second set.

Pitt-Bradford once again found themselves in some trouble in the third set, as Alfred got out to a 12-8 lead, and trailed by as many as seven in the match. Fagan started the Pitt-Bradford come back attempt, delivering two straight kills, and Rauh found an empty spot on the floor, cutting the lead to 18-15.

Later in the set, Rauh cut the deficit to just two at 22-20 with another perfect floater. However, the Saxons ended the match on a 3-0 run to pick up the victory in the third set.

"We are still looking for that consistency in our game," Roof said. "I do think we played very well defensively. Courtney Holzwarth did a terrific job today in the back row."

The fourth set was all Pitt-Bradford, as the Panthers cruised to a 25-10 victory to win the match, 3-1.

The Panthers return to AMCC play Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Hilbert.

"Hopefully we can build on the momentum we gained today and carry it into our big conference match with Hilbert," Roof said. "Hilbert's a tough place to play and it would be great to get a victory out there."
