Lady Panthers suffer 3-0 first round defeat to Lions

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Penn State Behrend Lions in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament on Wednesday night at the KOA Arena.

Pitt-Bradford (11-23, 5-4) fell 25-22, 25-13 and 25-21 in consecutive sets. Twice during the match, the Lady Panthers crawled back after trailing by a large margin, but couldn't work their way to a victory.

Entering the third set, Pitt-Bradford trailed 2-0. The Panthers fell behind 14-6 before rallying to tie the set with eight unanswered points. The two squads battled back and forth for the remainder of the game before the Lions stole the show by claiming the final points.

Playing in their final match in a Panther uniform, seniors Taylor McMillen and Brittni Cumberland guided the Panthers just as they have done all season. McMillen registered 11 kills, one assist and three digs, while Cumberland finished with three kills, 13 assists and 11 digs.

Defensively, junior Jenessa Ceprish capped her night with 12 digs to go with one assist.

The defeat marks the end of the 2014 season for the Lady Panthers. Thus far in her career, head coach Tina Phillips has reached the playoffs in each of her seasons at the helm of the program and she offered her thoughts on tonight after the match.

"We just didn't have a lot of things go our way tonight," said Phillips. "Give Behrend credit, they played well. We weren't strong in the serving or receiving categories where it all starts. We gave it a good run, but it just wasn't good enough tonight."
