Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team took on Penn State-Altoona on Saturday afternoon, looking for a win to qualify for post-season play. The Panthers fell behind early and could not regain control, ultimately losing the match 7-0.
Before the start of the game, the Panthers took a few moments to recognize their three graduated seniors. Kimberly Goodwin played 59 games over 4 seasons with the Panthers, registering 11 shots and 6 assists. Ainslie Gardner has battled through injuries to play 25 games over 3 seasons for Pitt-Bradford. She has scored 3 goals and added 2 assists. Avery Benzel was the third Panther honored, after joining the team for this season. She has played and started 14 games, scoring 1 goal and tallying 3 assists.
The Panthers fell under attack from the start, as The Lions took the ball right from the kickoff and moved downfield. The visitors opened the scoring after 3 minutes, taking advantage of the Panthers' inability to clear a corner to sneak a shot into the goal. Mackenzie Harmon made 5 saves over the next 20 minutes, keeping the deficit at one. Mya King and Gianna Gomez each put shots on target in the stretch but could not level the score. In the 26th, Penn State-Altoona doubled the lead with a well-placed shot that hit the inside of the post and went into the net. Pitt-Bradford nearly got to the locker room trailing by 2, but the Lions headed a shot to the near post to beat Harmon and take a 3-0 lead into the break.
After the break, the Panthers seemed to start a comeback as Avery YArd was able to find space around the 18-yard box, but her effort was blocked, keeping the deficit at three. After King had another shot saved in the 58th, the Lions extended their lead with a goal in the 59th minute. Two minutes later Penn State-Altoona scored their 5th of the game and added the 6th in the 72nd minute. Avery Yard nearly pulled back a goal in the 87th minute as she had two consecutive shots stopped from close range. In the final minute of play, the Lions scored their 7th on a penalty kick following a Panther foul in the box.
Avery Yard took 3 shots for the Panthers, putting all three on goal. Mya King led the team with 6 attempts, forcing saves on two of them. Gianna Gomez also registered a shot on goal, while Ainslie Gardner had an effort that missed the target. Mackenzie Harmon made 12 saves in the loss.
The Panthers fall to 6-6-3 on the season with a 1-5-2 record in AMCC play. They have been eliminated from postseason contention. They are scheduled to bring their season to a close on Monday, as they will host Bryant and Stratton-Buffalo at 5:00 p.m.
