
Beaver Falls, Pa. -- Fresh off their first victory of the season on Sunday, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's soccer team set a new program record on Wednesday as they defeated Penn State Beaver 15-0.
The Panthers scored early and often, scoring the program's most goals in a game since joining the NCAA in 1998. The Panthers also used a balanced attack with 11 different players scoring in the contest.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the 8th minute. After a scramble in the box, Lauren Donnelly was able to tip a pass to Emily Gibbons who released a one-time shot past the goalkeeper. Four minutes later, Avery Yard doubled the advantage. The Panthers collected a corner outside the box, and after a pass to the middle of the field, Kimberly Goodwin found Yard alone inside the area. Yard collected the pass and sent a shot to the far post and into the open goal.
In the 16th minute, Mya King controlled a pass from Donnelly in the area, dribbled to her right, and hit a shot to the near side for her 4th goal of the year. In the 23rd, Donnelly became the scorer for the Panthers. She was able to gather a rebound off a blocked shot and floated a shot into the top left corner for the 4th goal of the game.
Pitt-Bradford quickly added two more, scoring a pair of goals in less than a minute. Gianna Gomez scored the fifth for the Panthers, finding a loose ball after the hosts failed to clear a corner. She reacted first and hit a one-time shot into the corner from close range. Just 49 seconds later, King scored her second of the game. She collected a pass in the box, dribbled into open space, and ripped a shot back across the face of the goal into the side netting. In the 38th, King completed her hattrick, dribbling through the defense until she found enough space to fire a shot into the roof of the net.
After the break, it did not take long for the Panthers to find the net again, scoring 49 seconds into the half. After controlling possession through the midfield, Emily Gibbons sent a through pass behind the defense for Gomez, who beat the defense to the ball and slid a shot into the far corner for her second of the game. In the 48th minute, Makartnee Mortimer opened her account for the year. She controlled a cross from Avery Benzel and fired a left-footed shot to the near post, past the Penn State-Beaver keeper to put the Panthers up 9-0.
In the 53rd, Benzel was able to score the Panther's 10th. After a cross, Benzel controlled the ball with her head and then looped another header over the defense and goalkeeper for a goal. Six minutes later, Payton Frank found Hannah Clarke streaking behind the defense. Clarke was able to run onto the pass and send a shot into the far corner for the 11th. Rylee Billings joined the party a few minutes later. King sent a pass behind the defense for Billings, whose first shot was parried by the Lions goalkeeper, but the rebound fell right back to Billings who slid her second effort into the open goal.
The Panthers' 13th goal came via a corner kick in the 72nd minute. King's cross was met by Mortimer inside the six, who headed a shot into the goal for her second of the game. Four minutes later, another Panther opened their collegiate tally, as Daniela Banuel Alarcon scored the 14th for the Panthers. Banuel Alarcon took advantage of a mishit back pass to go on the break and calmly finished past the keeper. Lastly, Ainslee Gardner closed the scoring in the 77th. After her attempted pass was intercepted, Gardner pressed the defender, stole the ball back, and sent a shot to the low corner for the last Panther goal.
In total the Panthers tallied 73 shots, putting 43 of them on target. Mya King led the way with 3 goals on 11 shots and 2 assists. She has scored 6 goals so far this season. Makartnee Mortimer and Gianna Gomez each scored their first two goals of the season. Mortimer scored 2 on 6 shots. Gomez used 10 shots to score her pair. Lauren Donnelly and Avery Benzel each finished with a goal and an assist. Emily Gibbons scored once and assisted another, while Daniela Banuel Alarcon, Rylee Billings, Avery Yard, Hannah Clark,e and Ainslee Gardner all scored one goal. Payton Frank and Kimberly Goodwin did not score, but each had an assist.
Benzel, Gomez, Donnelly, Banuel Alarcon, Billings, Yard, and Clarke all scored their first collegiate goals in the victory. Maddison Coe and Mackenzie Harmon each played a half in the Panther goal and did not face a shot.
The Panthers record is 2-1-1 after the win. They will be back at home on Saturday as they host Thiel as part of the Pantherfest celebration at the Kessel Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
