Six Panthers Earn Podium Spots at Jamestown Jayhawk Open

Jamestown, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team competed as individuals on Sunday, wrestling in the Jamestown Jayhawk Open, hosted by Jamestown Community College. Six of eleven Panthers placed in their weight classes, while 3 others picked up multiple wins.

The Panthers best finish came in the heavyweight class, where both Pitt-Bradford wrestlers earned podium spots. Gavin Thompson finished the event in 2nd, going 3-1 on the day. He began the day with two pins with the first coming at 1:29, and the second at 1:19. He secured a place in the final with a 4-0 decision victory. In the class finals, he fell by pin at 1:11.

Cameron Carter-Green also earned a podium finish, taking 4th. After an opening round bye, Carter-Green pinned his first opponent in 2:22. He fell by major decision in the semifinal, but followed that with a 7-5 win by decision to get into the 3rd place match. He held an early lead in the placement bout, but was taken down late in the 3rd and lost 5-3.

At 174, D.J. Slovick took 3rd place, winning 4 of 5 matches. He pinned his first two opponents in the first period. The first match was finished in 1:12, then the second in 2:30. Unfortunately, he fell to the consolation bracket after losing to a wrestler from Division I Buffalo. In the consolation semifinal, he pinned another opponent, this time in 43 seconds, and then secured 3rd place with his 4th pin of the day, this time in 1:09.

Cade Stern had his best invitational showing, finishing 4th at 125. He lost his first match by a 6-4 decision, but then won his next 5 to earn his 4th-place finish. He pinned two opponents and then earned a spot in the consolation semifinal with a 7-4 decision victory. He picked up a medical forfeit but fell by pin in the 3rd place match.

Nikolas Fegert had a strong showing at 149, taking 5th place. He pinned his opening opponent in just 25 seconds and then advanced to the semifinal with a 7-5 win. He dropped the next two bouts by pin to fall to the 5th place match, where he received a win by no contest. 

The final Panther to place was Joe Magnano, who finished 6th at 133. He won his first match with a pin at 1:22 to move right into the class semifinal. He was pinned in the next two bouts and then lost in the 5th place match.

While they missed podium positions, 3 other Panthers earned wins in their respective classes. Raymond Worsen picked up three wins at 157, including 2 pins. Dylan Slovick went 2-2 on the day, pinning his opponent in both victories at 141. Cael Dailey also picked up a win, pinning his first opponent at 125. 

The Panthers will be back in action next Sunday when they compete in Lycoming's Rennie Rodarmel Allstate Invitational. The action begins at 10:30 at Lamade Gymnasium in Williamsport.
