Washington, PA. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team competed in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday. As a team, the Panthers top lineup finished 7th with 79.5 points. 5 other Panthers wrestled in the invite, combining for 41.0 points. 7 total wrestlers earned podium positions at the event.
The Panthers bookended the weight classes as they had 2 place winners at 125 and in the heavyweight classes.
At 125, Cade Stern took 4th place. Following a first-round bye, Stern won his first two bouts of the meet, winning 5-0 by decision in his first match and then 12-2 by major decision in the second. He fell to the consolation bracket with an 8-3 decision loss in the semifinal and then was pinned in the 3rd place match.
Cael Dailey also placed for the Panthers in the 125-pound weight class, finishing in 6th. Dailey pinned his first opponent in 1:09 in his opening match, before falling in the next round. He pinned his first opponent in the consolation bracket in 2:16 and then eliminated his teammate Uriah Morris in the consolation semis by a 5-3 decision. He fell in the placement match by disqualification.
The Panthers also had a strong showing in the 285-pound weight classes, led by Gavin Thompson. Thompson finished 3rd among the heavyweights with 3 wins and a loss. After an opening bye, Thompson moved into the semifinal round with a pair of wins by decision, taking his first 6-2 and his second 4-1. Despite falling in the semis, he won third place by no contest in the placement round.
Cameron Carter-Green had the 2nd highest scoring day for Pitt-Bradford, taking 5th at 285. Carter-Green's day started off rough, falling by a 4-3 decision in round 1. He caught fire in the consolation bracket, pinning three straight opponents before securing his spot in the 5th place match with a 20-8 major decision victory. In the placement match, he battled to a 12-7 win by decision to claim 5th place in his class.
The Panthers' best scorer of the day was Nikolas Fegert, grappling at 149 lbs. Fegert started strong, winning his opening match by an 11-2 major decision before pinning his second opponent in 6:28. He fell in the 4th round, but came right back and dominated his next two opponents with a 15-0 tech fall victory, followed by his second pin of the day with a time of 6:52. He secured 5th place in his class with a win by no-contest.
Raymond Worsen III wrestled at 157 and took 4th place and 14 points. He got off to a quick start with a 17-4 major decision win in the opener, followed by a win by fall at 2:54 in his second match of the day. In the semis, he faced tougher competition, falling by major decision before losing a tough 9-8 decision in the placement match to fall to 4th.
Last, but not least, D.J. Slovick also took 4th place in the 184 lb. weight class. After a bye, Slovick advanced to the semis with a 7-2 decision victory. He struggled in his last two matches, losing both to fall to 4th place.
Pitt-Bradford also saw success from wrestlers who did not earn a podium position. Freshman Dylan Slovick won 3 matches, including 1 by major decision and 2 pins to earn 7 team points at 141. Uriah Morris won two matches at 125, while Jake Rodgers, Joe Magnano, and Mamady Traore all had wins at the tournament.
The Panthers will be back in action next Sunday when they travel to Scranton to wrestle in the Electric City Duals. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. hosted by the University of Scranton.
