Williamsport, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford wrestling team took on two tough opponents at the Penn College Quad match on Saturday, falling to the hosts 35-16 in their opener and to Keystone 32-12 in their second of the day.
The Panthers were behind Penn College from the start, as they were down 29-0 after 5 weight classes. Tyler Newton was able to get the Panthers on the board at 165, winning by a 16-3 major decision. Victor Elias built some momentum for the Panthers at 174, winning his match by decision. He won his bout by a score of 8-5 in sudden victory.
Following a loss at 184, the Panthers were able to close strong with two victories in the last two bouts of the match. Chase Proudfit was able to eke out a 4-3 win at 197, also getting a win in the bonus period. Ty Stahli closed the match with a pin at 3:42.
The Panthers fell behind early in their second match of the day as well. After the first four weight classes, the Panthers were trailing 21-0, but made a ferocious comeback to put the match result in doubt.
Newton once again dominated his opponent at 165, this time earning 5 points on a decision by tech fall. Newton shut out his opponent, earning a 15-0 victory. After the Newton win, Elias picked up his second win of the day, this time pinning his opponent at 6:55 to give the Panthers 6 more points. Nathan Powley put the Panthers within one win of their opponents with a tech fall victory at 184. He defeated his opponent by a score of 18-1.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, their comeback was halted there, as they were unable to secure a win in the final two matches of the day, losing each by pin.
The Panthers will make their return to KOA Arena for the first time this season next week, as they close their season with three straight home events. It will begin with a dual match against Jamestown Community College on Friday, February 11th. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
