Pittsburgh, PA -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford played its second match of the AMCC Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon, taking on #2 William Smith in a mega-match. The Panthers struggled to keep up with the Herons after a draining opening-round matchup and lost both formats in the match to fall 2-0.
The matchup started with a 5-player traditional game. The Panthers all struggled to score in the match and lost to the Herons 879-701. Brookelyn Garvey led the way at 181 but was the only Panther to surpass 140 pins. Jaylee Koppenhaver was the next-best scorer at 139, while Mackenzie Gill was just behind at 137. Erin Wales posted a 127, while Olivia Shultz stepped in and rounded out the scoring at 117.
Despite a slow start to the Baker match, the Panthers battled back to cut the deficit to six pins, but ultimately fell 862-810. In game one, the Panthers lost a tight match 140-142, and then saw the deficit grow in game two as the Herons won 208-177. The Panthers had their best game of the day in the third match, winning 188-182, and then cut the lead to six with a 155-134 win in the fourth. In the final game, the Panthers lost 150-196 to complete the match.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to the elimination side bracket for the tournament. They will begin day 2 with a matchup against #5 Hilbert, who defeated Penn State-Behrend in the opener but lost to top-seeded Saint Vincent. The action is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Pines Plaza Lanes in Pittsburgh.
