Cheswick, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team competed in the Unicorn Classic on Sunday, going 1-3 in Baker Bowling before dropping the placement match to finish 6th.
The Panthers began their day with a match against William Smith, which they lost 796-831. Pitt-Bradford jumped into the lead with a 162-156 win in game one but then found themselves trailing by 72 pins after a 165-199 loss in game two and a 132-176 defeat in the third game. In game 4, Pitt-ford was able to cut into the lead with a 172-145 victory, leaving them with a 45-pin deficit in the final game. The Panthers won game 5, but only by a 10-pin margin at 165-155, falling short of the Herons' 5-game total.
In their second match of the day, the Panthers took on the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats. Pitt-Bradford started the match slowly dropping the first two games 151-165, and 157-186. The Panthers eked out a 1-pin victory in game three 165-164, and then took the lead with a 183-135 victory in the fourth. They took a 6-pin advantage into the final game of the match, but could not hold on to it, losing the game 131-155 and the match 787-805.
Pitt-Bradford was finally able to get into the win column in their third match of the day against Ursuline. The Panthers exploded early, posting their best game of the day in the opener, winning 224-182. They added to their lead over the next three games, winning game two 191-128, tying the middle game 168 all, and then taking game four 161-126. They fell in game 5 135-158, but still held on for an 869-762 match win.
The Panthers had their best game of the day in the final round-robin matchup, but still fell to Saint Vincent 920-1025. They remained within shouting distance of the Bearcats after two games, losing the first 182-187 and the second 177-179, but saw the deficit increase to 61 after a 169-223 loss in game 3. They cut into the lead with a 209-199 win in the fourth game, but could not keep up with Saint Vincent in the fifth, falling 183-237.
Through four matches, the Panthers were in 5th place with an average of 168.6 pins per match. In the placement match, they took on Penn State-Behrend who was just behind them in 6th. Pitt-Bradford had a slow start to the match, losing the opening game 120-171, but then whittled away at the lead with a 161-151 win in game two and a 177-176 victory in the third. The deficit grew after their opponents exploded to a 176-222 win in the fourth. In the final game of the day, the Panthers stayed with the Lions, but lost the game 168-169 and the match 802-899 dropping them into 6th place.
The Panthers' record is now 13-26 heading into the first AMCC Round Robin next weekend. The first round robin will be hosted by William Smith and begins on Friday at Sunset Bowl in Waterloo, N.Y. At the event, the Panthers will face all 9 AMCC teams in a 5-game Baker Bowling format with the winner decided by total pinfall.
