Panthers Win 2, Finish 10th at Niagara Brunswick Open

Kenmore, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team wrapped up play at the Niagara Brunswick Open on Sunday, winning 2 of 4 Baker bowling matches while securing a 10th-place finish for the tournament.

The day started with four Baker matches with the winner determined by 5 game total pinfall. The Panthers dropped the first two games but then battled back to win the last two games of the round-robin.

Match one saw the Panthers take on Merrimack, in a tight match which they would lose 850-897. Pitt-Bradford fell behind with 146-172 and 146-171 losses in the opening two games. They cut into the lead with wins in games 3 & 4, taking the third 209-193 and the fourth 174-168. The Panthers trailed by 30 pins heading into the final game of the match but ultimately lost 175-192.

In their second match, Pitt-Bradford faced Bryant, falling 782-900. They lost the first four games of the match but were able to build some momentum heading into their final matches of the round-robin with a 162-150 win in game 5.

The Panthers picked up their first victory of the event in match 8 with a 752-737 win over Hilbert. The Panthers struggled early in the match, dropping the first three games by a total of 44 pins, but were able to take the lead with a 198-132 win in game 4. With a 12-pin advantage heading into game 5, the Panthers secured the match victory by eking out a 173-170 win.

Pitt-Bradford closed the round-robin with a matchup against a familiar foe, Penn State-Behrend, winning 827-789. They lost the opening game 165-187 but battled back to take game two 170-118. The Panthers went into game 4 with a 3-pin lead, but dominated the Lions with a 205-138 win, building a commanding lead. The Panthers fell in the 5th game 148-180, but their cushion was large enough to hold on for a victory.

The Panthers qualified for the placement rounds in 10th place and took on Daemen with a chance to move up a spot in the final rankings. Unfortunately, Pitt-Bradford ran out of steam, dropping 4 straight games to lose the mega match. They lost the games 116-204, 110-164, 145-167 and 145-170.

The Panthers will return to action next weekend with a pair of single-day events. They will be in Latrobe, PA. on Saturday to bowl in the Brother Lacy Tournament, hosted by Saint Vincent, before heading to Pittsburgh for the Unicorn Invite on Sunday.
