Panthers Start Slow at Niagara Brunswick Open

Kenmore, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford returned to action after a three-week hiatus at the Niagara Brunswick Open in Kenmore, N.Y. The Panthers faced tough competition and struggled to find their rhythm, losing all 5 of their traditional matches on day one of the tournament.

The Panthers had their best game of the day in the opener, yet still fell to AMCC foe St. Vincent 804-843. Alexis Whitfield had the high game for the Panthers at 176. Brookelyn Garvey rolled a 165, while Mackenzie Gill was just behind her at 161. 

In match two, the Panthers took on Daemen, this time falling 758-869. Erin Wales had her best game of the day, leading Pitt-Bradford at 182. 

Pitt-Bradford faced off against Mount St. Mary in their third contest of the day, losing 755-917. Gill led the Panthers at 183, while Olivia Shultz was the 2nd-best score for the Panthers at 163.

The Panthers were matched up with the hosts, Niagara in match four, falling to the Division I squad 784-912. Brookelyn Garvey found her footing in this game, posting a 216 to lead the team. 

Garvey stayed hot in the Panthers' final match of the day, despite a 788-832 loss to Mercyhurst. Garvey rolled a 223, posting Pitt-Bradford's best score of the day. Wales continued her productive day, finishing at 181. 

Brookelyn Garvey led the Panthers on the day, posting an average of 184.60 pins per game, the 13th-best at the event. Erin Wales finished 31st with an average of 165.20 pins per game. Bowling in the leadoff spot, Mackenzie Gill was 35th at 156.80. Olivia Shultz was 8 spots behind Gill in 43rd with an average of 139.40. Alexis Whitfield rounded out the scoring for Pitt-Bradford at 131.80 in 46th.

The Panthers' total pinfall puts them in 10th out of 12 teams. They will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of competition. Day 2 will consist of 5 Baker matches, followed by a placement round decided by best-of-7 baker matches.
