Panthers in 8th after Day 2 at Red Flash Invitational

Altoona, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's bowling team was back in action on day 2 at the Red Flash Invitational, hosted by Saint Francis University. For the second consecutive day, the Panthers went 1-4 in 5 baker matches, putting them in 8th place heading into the final placement rounds.

The Panthers started their day with a tough loss to Pitt-Greensburg 693-710. The Panthers fell behind early, dropping the opener 134-172. They were able to pull a few pins back with a 147-140 win in the second game, but could not come up with wins in games 3 and 4. Trailing by 56 pins heading into the 5th and final game, the Panthers were able to come up with a 151-112 win but fell 17 pins short in their comeback attempt.

The Panthers were able to come back after a disappointing start and defeat Penn State-Altoona 828-770 in their second match of the day. They dominated the Lions early, winning the first four games of the match. They took the first game 196-163 and then added to their lead with a 134-129 win in game two, a 171-157 win in game three, and an impressive 201-181 win in game four to build a 72-pin lead heading into match 5. In the final game, the Panthers fell off, losing 126-140, but were able to pick up the win regardless.

The Third match of the day saw Pitt-Bradford take on Mount Aloysius, and lose 743-809. The Panthers were unable to win any of the individual games in the match, losing four while drawing one. They lost the opener 154-172 and then game two 146-174. They picked up a 165-165 tie in the third game, before losing games 4 and 5 143-146, and 135-152.

Pitt-Bradford's best match of the day came in a tough loss to Morgan State. The Panthers racked up 883 pins, but could not keep up with the Division 1 squad, who totaled 933. The Panthers lost the opener 222-170, but battled back with their best performance of the day, winning game 2 218-187. They lost the next two games 249-201 and 154-195, before closing the gap with a 192-128 win in the fifth game.

The day came to a close with a tough loss to another D1 opponent. The Panthers took on Duquesne and fell 755-992. The Panthers lost the first three games but were able to come up with a 197-175 win in game 4 before losing the final game to finish the match.

Erin Wales led the Panthers with a 16.34 pin-per-frame average on the day. This was buoyed by an excellent match 4 that saw her average 20.6 pins per frame. Brookelyn GArvey was next, averaging 15.60 pins per frame, while Sarah Newland was just behind her at 15.2. Olivia Shultz averaged 13.62 pins per frame, while Alexis Wheatfield was at 12.7

The Panthers will have one more day of competition in Altoona before returning home. They will bowl in the placement rounds tomorrow, bowling in a best-of-seven Baker bowling format. They will start the day against 7th-seeded Pitt-Greensburg.
