Panthers Fall to Spartans

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team fell behind AMCC foe D'Youville early and were never able to make up the deficit as they lost 75-53. Prior to the game, players from both teams joined at midcourt to celebrate the Play4Kay Foundation. Play4Kay is the largest fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which looks to unite all of women's basketball in the fight against cancer. The teams met at midcourt with placards recognizing those whom they play for who may have battled cancer in teh past.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers were able to keep up with the 4th seeded Spartans in the early action, as they held them to only 8 points over the opening 5 minutes. Jasmin Miller made a layup off a Cassidy King pass to get the Panther offense started and a possession later, Shaelyn Snipes made a quick lay-up off an outlet pass from Jenna Hicks. After two quick buckets saw the Spartans restore their 4 point lead, Miller banked home a three to cut the deficit to 1.
  • The Spartans responded with 4 quick points, but the Panthers were resilient and answered the field goals with a lay-up from Shirleah Ragin and a corner jump shot from Lyric Collins. After the Collins jumper, D'Youville closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 10 point lead to the second.
  • The Spartans quickly added two free throws to their lead, but the Panthers came back with a La'Shyra Williams three-point play and Ragin putback to get the deficit to 7. The Panthers remained within 7 points for the majority of the period, until a later rally saw D'Youville open up a 15 point lead at the break.
  • Pitt-Bradford got off to a cold start after the break as they were held scoreless for the first 4:22 of the third. This allowed the Spartans to push their lead to 20 points. The Panthers were able to score 8 of 9  from the free-throw line before Daizjah Brown hit a jumper in the paint The Brown bucket forced D'youville into a timeout after seeing their lead shrink to 12 points. The timeout worked for a moment as the Spartans ended the run with a basket inside, but the Panthers got the lead back down to 10 points with jumpers from Snipes and King. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Spartans scored 5 straight in the final minute to restore the 15 point lead heading to the 4th.
  • The Panthers were able to score first in the fourth through another Daizjah Brown mid-range jumper and a basket from Williams, but they went cold once more and the Spartans took advantage to enhance their advantage to over 20 points.

Leaders:

  • Daizjah Brown led the Panthers in scoring off the bench. She scored 14 points, shooting 4 of 6 from the field and adding 6 of 8 from the line.
  • Jasmin Miller and Shaelyn Snipes both finished in double-figures, scoring 12 and 10 points each.
  • Jenna Hicks led the team in rebounds with 9 and Shirleah Ragin led in assists with 6.

The loss drops the Panthers to 3-21 on the season with a 3-16 record in conference play.
