Win streak ends as Lady Panthers drop 71-63 decision

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Pitt-Bradford women's basketball team had its five-game Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference winning streak halted with a 71-63 defeat to the La Roche Redhawks on Saturday at the KOA Arena.

Senior Alicia Kimmel lit up the scoreboard for Pitt-Bradford (9-5, 6-2) with 21 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. She also tallied one block.

Despite holding a 32-28 advantage at the break, the Lady Panthers allowed La Roche (11-4, 8-0) to outscore them in the second period on its way to the victory.

The biggest difference in the contest was the Redhawks ability to control the boards. La Roche out-rebounded Pitt-Bradford 40-29. The Panthers were strong from the free-throw line however, sinking a total of 14 shots on 21 attempts. La Roche finished the game 8-of-14 from the stripe.

The first period was a physical battle for both squads as neither team backed down to its opponent in one-on-one situations. The Redhawks grabbed the first four points of the day before the Panthers got on the board with Kimmel's first jump shot.

From there it was back and forth with La Roche holding the advantage on the scoreboard until junior Abby Brate's free throw with 3:46 remaining. The Lady Panthers put a run together to end the half and carried the four point lead into the locker room.

Nearly three minutes ticked off the clock to begin the second half before a bucket was scored. The Redhawks tied the game on a short jump shot from LaShauna Brothers in the paint. The visitors took advantage of the momentum and moved their lead into double digits with 11:10 to play.

The Panthers attempt at cutting into its deficit late in the period but fell short as the clocked ticked its last tick and La Roche escaped with the eight-point win.

"We only played 20 minutes of basketball in a 40 minute game," said head coach Patrick Daniel. "That is not good enough, especially against a team like La Roche. We gave up too many offensive rebounds and had too many turnovers. Those are corrections we can make and will make."

Pitt-Bradford finished the afternoon 44.4 percent from the field, including 33 percent (1-of-3) from behind the arc. La Roche shot 46.8 percent and connected on 5-of-11 shots from three.

The Lady Panthers are back in action on Monday, Jan. 19, as Medaille comes to the KOA Arena for a 6 p.m. tip.
