Munhall, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford faced a quick turnaround on Monday, playing their second road doubleheader in as many days at Carlow. The Panthers scored first in both games, but lost them, falling 3-2 in extra innings in game one and 9-1 in 5 innings in game two.
Game One:
Pitt-Bradford got off to a quick start, scoring before an out was recorded, however, they struggled to string together hits for the remainder of the game. After the game was tied in the 7th, they took the lead in the extra frame, but couldn't keep the Celtics off the board in the bottom half and fell 3-2.
Miranda Groll led off the contest with a walk, and then immediately came around to score when Sara Stroup hit a triple to left center. The inning came to a quick end, as Stroup was thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a groundout and then Krislyn Clement flew out to finish the frame. Sandra Watne started in the circle for the Panthers and posted a shutdown inning in the first, stranding two runners after allowing one hit and a fielder's choice that did not record an out.
Pitt-Bradford's offense struggled to find their footing after the first, as they were held to just one hit over the next four frames, a 3rd inning double by Groll. While the offense sputtered, Watne was efficient and scattered 7 more hits, but keeping them off the board. She left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 3rd, and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 4th to keep the Celtics scoreless.
In the 6th, the Panthers threatened to extend their lead. Groll dropped down a one-out bunt single and then stole second base. After a fly out to center, Meghan Kapp reached on an error to continue the inning. Both runners stole the next base, but Clement could not come through with a hit, going down on strikes to end the inning. Christa Koagel replaced Watne to start the 6th and made quick work of the Celtics. She struck out the first two batters she faced and then ended the frame on a fly ball to left.
Pitt-Bradford put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs to begin the 7th, but once again could not come up with the clutch hit to extend their lead. The next three panthers were retired on a strikeout, a pop-up, and a groundout to end the frame. Leaving runners in scoring position came back to hurt the Panthers as the Celtics scratched across a run in the 7th. Koagel retired the leadoff batter, but then let the tying run on base with a single. The runner advanced on a ground out, putting the Panthers one out away from ending the game. The next batter grounded a single up the middle. Groll came up throwing from the outfield however the relay throw to the plate was just late, sending the game to extra innings.
In the bonus frame, Payton Frank started the inning on second base. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Groll and then scored when Stroup lined a single through the left side. The Celtics similarly started the inning with a sacrifice bunt and then tied the game with a sac fly to center. They restarted the inning with back-to-back singles and then saw the frame extended on a fielding error in the infield. With the bases loaded, Koagel could not come up with another out, as the next batter lined a single into right to bring in the winning run.
Christa Koagel (1-5) received the loss after allowing 3 runs, 1 earned, in 2.2 innings pitched. She struck out 2. Watne scattered 8 hits over 5 scoreless innings to receive a no-decision. Sara Stroup went 2 for 4 with a triple and both RBI for the Panthers. Miranda Groll was 2 for two with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Game Two:
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Panthers scored first again, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. They put runners in scoring position in the 2nd 3rd and 4th innings, but once again could not find a hit to bring in the runs. They would rue the missed opportunities late, as the Celtics scored 3 in the 3rd and 6 in the 4th to bring the game to an early end after 5.
Sara Stroup started a short 2-out rally in the 1st, driving a double down the left field line. She was driven in a batter later on a single to center by Krislyn Clement. Clement started the game in the circle for the Panthers and worked around a leadoff single to post a shutdown inning in the first.
Ciera Adams and Lilly Hamels both singled to start the second and moved up an extra base on a bobble in the outfield. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out the next three Panthers were retired on a strikeout and a pair of fly balls to leave the runners stranded. The Celtics loaded the bases with a single, an error and a walk in the bottom half, but Clement induced a fly ball to left to end the inning without allowing a run.
In the 3rd, Christa Koagel led off with a single and then after a fielder's choice and a strikeout, Meghan Kapp singled to center. The senior took second base on the play as Carlow threw to third base, but the rally ended a batter later with a strikeout. The hosts finally struck in the 3rd inning, scoring 3 runs. Clement retired the first batter with a popup but then allowed consecutive singles to center. She picked up a second out on a strikeout but then allowed a two-out three-run home run to left field.
Trailing 3-1, the Panthers tried to rally once more when Lilly Hamels drew a leadoff walk and Jada Polczynski singled on a bunt. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt, but could not advance further as the next two batters were retired on a pop-up and a fly ball, ending the threat. Clement retired the leadoff batter in the 4th but then allowed two more singles. After getting a second out on a fielder's choice, she was relieved by Kalie Dixon. The Freshmen Southpaw struggled to find the zone, walking 3 batters around a single to allow 3 runs to score. Sandra Watne replaced her after the third free pass but allowed all three inherited runners to score. She was finally able to end the frame with a strikeout as the Panthers trailed 9-1.
Needing to score to extend the game, the Panthers went down 1-2-3 in the 5th to end the contest.
Krislyn Clement (3-10) received the loss after being charged with 5 earned runs on 7 hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Kalie Dixon allowed 4 runs on a hit and 3 walks. Watne got the final out, allowing 2 hits with a strikeout. Sara Stroup scored the Panthers' lone run and went 1 for 3 with a double. Clement finished 1 for 2 with an RBI. Lilly Hamels reached both times she came to the plate, hitting a single to left and drawing a walk.
