Hamburg, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team scored a game-tying goal in the 89th minute on Wednesday, earning a 1-1 draw at Hilbert.
The hosts struck first, taking the lead in the 18th minute. A Hilbert attacker headed a shot into the goal from a corner kick. The Panthers' best chance to tie the match in the first half came in the 26th minute. After a foul outside the box, Will Smith stepped up and fired the resulting free-kick towards the goal. He beat the wall but saw his effort bounce off the crossbar and out of play. Bailee Verdill was the only Panther to put a shot on target in the first stanza, but his 44th-minute effort was stopped.
Neither team grabbed full control of the game in the 2nd half. Brady Hathaway forced a Hilbert save in the 65th, and Troy Van Sickle made a pair of stops to keep the deficit at one. Still trailing by 1 with time dwindling on the clock, Jaden Nye had a shot blocked, but continued forward and drew another foul in dangerous territory.
After hitting the woodwork earlier, Smith lined up another freekick, looking to tie the game. This time he was successful as his shot bent around the wall and found the upper 90 at the near post, evening the match at one. It was his 1st of the year.
In the final seconds, the Panthers nearly pulled off a lightning-quick counterattack but just ran out of time before a shot could be taken, ending the match in a draw.
Will Smith scored the lone goal for the Panthers, his first of the year. He had two other shots in the game. Brady Hathaway and Kyle Carlsen both had 2 shots, while Hathaway and Bailee Verdill each put a shot on target, forcing a save. Troy Van Sickle made 5 saves in the Panther goal.
The Panthers are now 3-11-1 on the season, with a 2-4-1 record in AMCC Play. They will host Penn State-Altoona in their conference finale on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for approximately 1:00 p.m., following Senior Day festivities prior to the contest.
