Bradford, PA. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team returned home to face Penn State-Behrend in an AMCC tilt on Wednesday Evening. The Panthers fell behind early and lost 5-0 to the Lions.
The Panther goal went under siege immediately, and the visitors opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Goalkeeper Troy Van Sickle made three saves before the lead doubled in the 15th and was pushed to 3 just half a minute later. Van Sickle made one more save in the half, but the Lions went ahead 4-0 with a goal in the 26th and 5 in the 33rd. Reiss Gaines put the Panther's first effort on target in the 41st minute on a curling shot coming off of the left wing.
Penn State-Behrend contained the majority of possession in the second half as well, but Van Sickle made 4 second-half saves to keep the final deficit at 5-0. Pitt-Bradford came close to scoring in the half, as they found the woodwork twice. In the 52nd minute, Pitt-Bradford won a corner kick and Kyle Carlsen sent a cross into the box. The Lions failed to clear the pass and Gladwin Timothy reacted first, taking a one-time shot off the loose ball that looped over the defense but off of the crossbar. The second opportunity came in the 71st minute. Bailee Verdil drew a free kick on the left flank, approximately 35 yards from goal. Will Smith took the free kick, and his shot hit the last man on the wall, however, the referee deemed that it was deflected by an extending arm, giving Smith another opportunity from just outside the 18. Smith, who scored 5 free-kick goals last season, whipped a shot over the wall, but it did not dip enough, as it clanged off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
Troy VanSickle played all 90 minutes in the Panther goal, making 10 saves. The Panthers took 4 shots, led by Will Smith who had two. Reiss Gaines had the only shot on goal, while Gladwin Timothy had a shot hit the crossbar.
The Panthers fall to 1-10 on the season. They will be back in action on Saturday, October 12th, when they host La Roche in a crucial AMCC contest. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
