Panthers Unable to Hold Off Wildcats

Williamsport, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford traveled to Williamsport on Tuesday evening for a non-conference tilt against Penn College. The Panthers scored early in the match, but could not hold on to the lead, losing 4-1 to the Wildcats.

The hosts had the first few opportunities in the game, but the Panthers used a lightning-quick counterattack to score on their first chance. Yihao Xu took possession of the ball down the left flank and dribbled into the final third. He could not hold off the Penn defenders but won a throw-in for his team. After the restart, Conner Rudsell played a pass behind the fullback for Hathaway, who quickly sent a low cross into the box. Bailee Verdill beat two defenders and the goalkeeper to the ball and tapped a shot into the vacant net. The goal was his 3rd of the season.

Pitt-Bradford nearly had two chances to double their lead within 4 minutes of the breakthrough, but saw their attacks ended on an offside call. They held strong until the 35-minute mark when Penn tied the game at one. Michael Riedel made 3 saves in the first half, working with his defense to keep the Penn attack in check.

After the break, the Wildcats kept possession for the majority of the half and kept firing towards the Panther goal. They took the lead in the 51st and then after Riedel made three more stops and the Panthers defended 5 more corner kicks, doubled their advantage. In the 75th Penn scored with a curled shot from outside the box, and then added their fourth goal of the game in the 78th after a missed clearance on the defensive line. Following the restart, Hathaway was able to carve out enough space for another shot but saw his effort saved.

Bailee Verdill scored the lone goal for the Panthers on his only shot of the game. It was his team-leading 3rd of the season. Brady Hathaway assisted the goal and recorded the only other Panther shot in the game. Michael Riedel made 8 saves in the loss.

The defeat drops the Panthers to 0-5 on the season. They will be back in action on Saturday, September 21st, when they travel to Westminster. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
