Panthers Eliminated from Playoff Contention After Loss

Altoona, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team traveled to Penn State-Altoona on Saturday looking to keep their post-season hopes alive. Needing a win and some help around the conference, the Panthers fell to the Lions 1-0 in a hard-fought game.

The Panthers started on the front foot, as they were able to take the first three shots of the game, Bailee Verdill had the first after 7 minutes, and 90 seconds later Brady Hathaway forced a save from the Lions keeper. The Lions took possession after a Gladwin Timothy shot was blocked, and kept the pressure on the Panthers, forcing two saves out of Jared Scarlett. Timothy had another shot in the 23rd minute but saw his effort parried away to keep the game scoreless. The Lions controlled the majority of possession for the final 20 minutes of the half, but Scarlett was able to make four saves to send the game to the break tied at zero.

Neither team was able to put a shot on target over the first 25 minutes of the second half. Penn State-Altoona had the first big chance in the half in the 72nd. They were able to get behind the Panthers' defense after a loose touch by the Panthers, but Scarlett was quickly off his line to make a double save to preserve his shutout. The Panthers attempted to strike next, as following a free kick in the 73rd, Bailee Verdill was able to win a header in the box. His effort bounded towards the far side netting, but it was blocked away by a diving Lion keeper at the last moment.

The Lions went down to 10 men in the 83rd, but Pitt-Bradford was not able to take advantage of the man advantage. Devin Stowe had a shot blocked before the Lions made one final attack in the 86th. After a Pitt-Bradford foul, Penn State-Altoona sent a long ball into the box, the Panther defense was unable to clear the ball, as it found a Lion attacker. Scarlett was able to make one closer-range stop, but the resulting rebound was collected by a Penn State-Altoona player who slipped a shot between the near post and a scrambling Panther defense to win the game.

Jared Scarlett made 10 saves in the Panther goal in the loss. The Panthers tallied 10 shots in the game, led by three each from Bailee Verdill and Devin Stowe. Verdill, Brady Hathaway, and Gladwin Timothy all had shots on goal.

The Panthers fall to 1-12-2 on the season with a 1-6-1 record in AMCC play. They will bring their season to a close on Tuesday when they take on Wells. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on the Wells Artificial Turf Field.
