Panthers Win in Double Overtime, on the Brink of Playoff Spot

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford defeated D'Youville College 1-0 in a thrilling double overtime match-up under the lights in Buffalo.

The Panthers struggled early with both their opponents and the windy conditions as they were unable to maintain possession in the first half of action. Pitt-Bradford was outshot 9-0 in the period as goalkeeper Sihle Sizani stopped all three that were on target. In the second half, the Panthers were still outshot by the Spartans by a wide margin, but were able to carve out a few chances of their own. Scott Compson was able to put the first Panther shot on goal 3 minutes into the half and Thomas Kelly came closer three minutes later. Kelley was able to get behind the defense and beat the keeper to the ball. He released a one time shot that beat the keeper, but found the post and bounced away to be cleared. In the 77th minute, Pitt-Bradford hit the woodwork once again. After a free kick from the right flank, neither squad was able to gain control until Chase Rider ripped a one time shot that hit the crossbar and went out of bounds for a goal kick. Sizani made three more saves in the half, as the Spartans fired off 12 shots overall in the half.

With both teams scoreless, the game moved into sudden death overtime. The first ten minute period saw little action as the teams shared possession and D'youville took the only shot which finished off target. After a quick rush by the Spartans to start the final period saw Sizani save a headed shot, The Panthers responded and were able to score to win the game. Spencer Sklar was able to take control of the ball in the final third and dribble between two defenders. He was held up for a moment as he pushed the ball behind the defense, but recovered and was able to slide a shot underneath the oncoming keeper to bring the match to an immeadiate end. The goal was Sklar's sixth of the season.

The Panthers finished with 5 shots in the match, Sklar leading them with 2. Compson, Rider and Kelly all added shots. Sizani made 7 saves in the game to pick up his 7th win and 4th shutout of the year.

With the victory, the Panther's record is now 9-6 with a 5-3 record in AMCC play. They are in 5th place with two games to play this season. Pitt-Bradford will clinch a spot in the AMCC playoffs with a win or tie on Saturday at LaRoche. Additionally, they can get into the post season if D'Youville fails to win both of their remaining games.
