McFetridge's Overtime Goal Gives Panthers Victory In AMCC Opener

BRADFORD, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's soccer team came out on top over Penn State-Altoona in the team's first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference match of the season after Steven McFetridge headed in the game-winning goal in overtime.

With the win, the Panthers start 1-0 in conference play for the first time since 2011.

"It was an even battle, with both teams getting their chances," Head Coach Nate Whitehurst said. "It just came down to who could find the game-winner, and luckily we found it first in overtime."

McFetridge's goal came off a corner kick 4:14 into overtime. Matthew Perry took the kick from the left side of the field, bounced it in front of the left post and McFetridge stormed in and got a head on it, sending it just inside the post.

The Panthers were selective in the first half, putting all four of their shots on goal.

In the first half, Penn State-Altoona put just one shot on goal.

The two teams went back and forth in a fast-paced second half, putting together offensive attacks on the counter.

Penn State-Altoona fired eight total shots in the half while the Panthers shot seven times.

Derrick Brock made five second-half saves to keep Penn State-Altoona out of the net and send the scoreless game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Panthers earned their chance after holding off a Penn State-Altoona corner kick chance.

McFedridge's goal was the team's second overtime winner of the season and his second goal of 2017.

For Brock, the 1-0 win is the first shutout of his career as the Panthers' goalkeeper.

With Saturday's victory in the conference opener, the Panthers have already tied their win total from a year ago.

The goal gives the team eight total on the year, tying 2016's goal total.

Pitt-Bradford will be in action next on Tuesday as they head to Nazareth for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
