Panthers Drop Exhibition Match at Division I Buffalo

Buffalo, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team had a unique opportunity on Tuesday night, as they traveled north to play an exhibition match with Division I Buffalo. The Panthers stayed with the Bulls early, but struggled to find their range and ultimately lost 100-65.

After falling behind 3-0, Jamarion Butler put the Panthers on the board, hitting a three off a feed from Jesse Laster. The hosts went back ahead by 3, but Pitt-Bradford responded, scoring 9 of 11 points to take a lead after 5 minutes. Braylen Salters started the rally with a three from the wing and then Rodd Yarbrough drove to the basket for a layup, putting the Panthers ahead. Following a media timeout and a Buffalo basket, Butler and Keshon Kittrell made back-to-back layups, giving Pitt-Bradford a 12-8 lead.

The hosts quickly responded to the deficit, scoring 7 quick points to retake the lead and force a Panther time-out. The rally continued after the break, as Pitt-Bradford only mustered 2 free throws while the Bulls pushed their lead to 6 at 20-14. Xander Norris and Jesse Laster cut the deficit to 2 with a three and a layup, but could not go any further, as Buffalo scored 7 straight to restore their advantage. The Bulls took control after a Tra Edwards layup, scoring 12 of the final 15 points of the half, sending the teams to the locker rooms with the score 46-30 after 20 minutes.

The Buffalo Run continued after the break, pushing their lead to 25 with an 11-2 run over the opening 3:40. The hosts maintained their advantage for the remainder of the game. The Panthers got the lead under 20 with consecutive layups by Coby Farley and Chris Martin, and then they trimmed the deficit to 16 with an Edwards three and a Robert Richards free throw. It would be as close as the Panthers would come, and Buffalo quickly scored 13 of 15 to restore their lead and coast to the finish.

Tra Edwards and Jamarion Butler led the Panthers in scoring, both finishing with 11 points. Edwards was 4-9 from the field, including 3-8 from beyond the arc. Braylen Salters added 8 points to go along with 3 steals. Samuel Brown led the team with 7 rebounds.

The Panthers record remains at 5-0 despite the loss, as the Panthers are not penalized for playing teams higher up the NCAA structure. They will return to action on Saturday when they kick off AMCC play with a matchup against Mount Aloysius. The action begins at 2:00 p.m. in KOA Arena.
