Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh of Bradford men's basketball team extended the program's best start in a quarter-century on Wednesday evening, winning their 4th straight game to start the season. The Panthers used their pressure defense to force 33 Alfred turnovers, leading to a 113-66 Pitt-Bradford win.
Pitt-Bradford got off to a quick start, scoring on their opening possession on a Jamarion Burler midrange jump shot. The visitors went ahead with a three and a free throw before the Panthers jumped ahead with a 14-7 run. Xander Norris began the rally with a three before Rodd Yarbrough extended the lead to 4 with back-to-back baskets. After Butler made another jumper, the Saxons made a run of their own, cutting the lead to 1 with 12 minutes left in the half.
Butler converted another jumper to end the Alfred rally and start one for the Panthers. After the basket, Pitt-Bradford quickly stole the ball in the backcourt and Keshon Kittrell converted it with a slam dunk, beginning a 25-1 run. Coby Farley caught fire during the rally, making three from beyond the arc and a driving layup. Farley added another three and a layup, giving him 16 points for the half. Rodd Yarbrough made two layups in the final minute of the period, sending the game to the break with Pitt-Bradford leading 54-33.
The Panthers came out of the break firing on all cylinders, scoring on their first three possessions of the 2nd without an Alfred response. Butler made a jump shot to start the half, and after a stop, Braylen Salters drove to the basket for a layup. Following another defensive rebound, Xavion Boone drove to the basket and finished an acrobatic layup through contact, which resulted in a three-point play.
Five minutes into the half, the Panthers sent the arena into a frenzy, scoring seven quick points in under 20 seconds. Butler started the run with a three-point play, and then, after the Panthers forced a turnover, he added another layup. Shortly after the inbounds pass, Jesse Laster beat an Alfred guard to a pass in the backcourt and threw down a powerful dunk to extend the lead to 29.
Salters made three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to 38 and then minutes later Yarbrough finished a dunk and a layup to put the Panthers over 100. In the final minutes, Robert Richards added 4 points, while Dante Sanchez and Tommy Walton each hit threes, to end the game with a 47-point advantage.
Jamarion Butler led all scorers with 23 points. He made 11-19 from the field. Rodd Yarbrough finished with 20 points, going 9-15 shooting. Braylen Salters scored 19 points, while also tallying 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Coby Farmey went 6-8, including 4-5 from three to finish with 16 points.
