Panthers Erase 22 Point Deficit, Beat R.I.T. in Overtime

Rochester, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team fought back from a 22-point deficit over the final 10 minutes of play to send their opening game of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament into overtime, where they defeated the Tigers 105-101.

  • Pitt-Bradford got off to an immediate start, as Dylan Meyer opened the scoring with a mid-range jumper on a pass from Isaiah Archie. The teams traded baskets through the opening 5 minutes of play until the Panthers were able to break ahead and take a 5-point advantage. Isaiah Archie made a putback layup to start the run, and after a defensive stop, Meyer made another jumper to put the Panthers up four. Following an R.I.T. layup, Karson Rumsky hit a three to give the Panthers a 5-point lead, their largest of the game. 
  • The hosts were able to slowly erase the lead and took the lead with just under ten minutes to go. After taking the lead, the Tigers finished the half on a 21-9 run to send the game to the break ahead 12 points.
  • After the break, the Panthers were unable to cut into the lead right away, as the Tigers maintained their double-digit advantage, despite four early Panther baskets. After ten minutes, R.I.T. had not only withstood the Panther attack but pushed their lead further. with 9:09 to go, they hit two free throws to go up 69-47. 
  • Following the free throws, the Panthers picked up momentum, making three-pointers on three consecutive possessions to force a Tiger timeout after just one minute. Nathan Schneider started the run with a three and after a Caden Beldin block, Trey Oyler hit another. Schneider forced the time out as he pulled up for another long ball. 
  • Isaiah Archie scored 6 straight for the Panthers, and then Beldin hit a three from the top of the key, which put the deficit back to single digits. Following an RIT free throw, Archie made two free throws of his own, and Caden Beldin made a putback layup to get the lead to just 5. R.I.T. answered with a layup, but an Alex Rodriguez responded with a three to send the game to its final three minutes with the Panthers down 4.
  • Another Rodriguez three got the Panthers to within three, but the Tigers were able to make a free throw and convert on a turnover to restore a 6 point advantage with just 36 seconds to go. Greg Archie drew a quick foul on the next possession and made both free throws to keep the Panthers alive. Pitt-Bradford was able to force R.I.T. into a turnover and Isaiah Archie took advantage, driving inside to make a layup while being fouled. Archie converted the free throw to put the Panthers down one. The Tigers made one of two free throws, setting the stage for a Greg Archie buzzer-beating layup that sent the game into overtime. 
  • The Panthers were the first to strike in the extra period, as Trey Oyler drilled a three to give Pitt-Bradford their first lead in over 31 minutes of game time. Alex Rodriguez was able to answer an R.I.T. layup with a midrange pull-up but saw the Tigers tie the game at 97 with a three of their own.
  • Isaiah Archie gave the Panthers the lead for good in the final two minutes. He made a layup inside to put the Panthers ahead, and then on the following possession stole a pass, sprinted down court, and threw down a two-handed dunk. He then made 3 of 4 from the line down the stretch to secure the Panther victory.

Isaiah Archie finished with 3 points on 13-19 from the field and 9-13 from the free-throw line. It was his second straight game scoring more than 30 points after he went for 36 against Keuka.

Nathan Schneider recorded his 4th double-double in 5 games, as he finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also led the team with 6 assists.

Greg Archie scored 14 points in the game, including the driving layup at the buzzer which sent the game to overtime. Alex Rodriguez also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points on 4 of 6 shooting.

The Panthers are now 4-1 on the season and will move on to the Championship Game of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament. They will take on SUNY Poly, who reached the game by defeating Fredonia State 82-69. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
