Panthers Come Up Short in Defensive Battle

Alfred, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team was unable to erase a 12 point halftime deficit, as they fell to Alfred State 68-60 on Wednesday night.

Game Notes:

  • Following two Alfred State baskets to start proceedings, Daniel Lynch got the Panthers on the board 2 minutes into the game when he hit a three-pointer on a pass from Nick Carmichael
  • The Pioneers slowly pushed their lead to as many as 6 points, but two consecutive threes from Jeffrey Fry cut the lead to 1 with 12:19 to go in the half.
  • A quick response from Alfred State set the Panthers back, as it was the beginning of a 16-2 Pioneer run which put them up 28-13 5 minutes later.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to slightly cut into the lead over the final 5 minutes of the half. The high point was an Alex Breindel three that put the Panthers down 10. The Pioneers answered with a jumper of their own and the teams exchanged a pair of free throws over the last two minutes of the 1st to go to halftime with the Panthers trailing 40-28.
  • After an uneventful opening to the second half, the Panthers went on a 7 point run with 16:24 to go. Lynch started the rally with a layup and Breindel followed up with a three on the next possession. Following nearly two minutes of defensive stops, Carmichael made a putback layup to cap the rally.
  • The Pioneers increased their lead back to 15 points, but an 8-0 stretch from Pitt-Bradford got the Panthers back in the game. Dylan Meyer made a jump shot through contact and converted the three-point with 10 minutes to go and after a turnover made a layup inside to cut the deficit to 10. Alex Rodriguez finished the run with a transition three off of a blocked shot from Miles Parker
  • Daniel Lynch got the Panthers to within 4 points of Alfred State with Consecutive baskets a minute apart. He completed a three-point play inside and followed that up with a mid-range jumper with 7:21 to play.
  • The Pioneers scored on back to back possessions following the Lynch basket but saw them nullified by two Meyer layups.
  • 4 points were as close as the Panthers would come to completing the comeback as Alfred State was able to hit their free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

Leaders:

  • Dylan Meyer finished in double-figures for the 5th straight contest, scoring 13 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to record his second double-double of the season.
  • Nick Carmichael also scored 13 points for the Panthers, making 5 of 9 from the field and all three free throws he attempted.
