Softball Swept in Home Doubleheader with Penn State-Behrend

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh softball team played two tight contests with AMCC leading Penn State Behrend on Sunday, but were unable to stop the lions as they lost both games. The Panthers fell 6-3 in the opener and 5-1 in game two.

Game 1:

  • Things looked bright for the Panthers early on as they got a quick 123 inning to begin the day and pushed a run across in their half of the first. The Panthers scored using two hits in the first. Gabby Carpenter led off with a single through the left side of the infield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She scored when Daytona Wentzel, the next batter, drove a double off the fence in right-center.
  • The Lions were able to respond right away with a big inning in the 2nd. They tied the game quickly, as two of the first three batters in the 2nd doubled. The Panthers were almost out of the inning with one run scored, but a pop-up dropped in between two infielders to continue the inning. The Lions took advantage of the misplay, quickly scoring three more runs on a single up the middle and a double to left.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to trim the lead to 1 with a two-run third inning. Chloe Cordova started the rally with a single back up the middle. Wentzel picked up her second hit of the day, and then Lathrop made it three in a row to bring Cordova home. Wentzel was able to score during the next at bat she scampered home as pinch-runner Kayla Day was caught stealing 2nd base.
  • The Lions used a Panther error to retake momentum in the next inning. A Penn State-Behrend runner reached on an error with one out in the 4th and then moved to 3rd on a two-out double to the gap in left-center. A second consecutive double brought both runners home, putting the Lions up 6-3.
  • Abby Hinkley kept the Lions in check for the final three innings, but the Panthers were unable to come up with a run-scoring hit in their final four at-bats. She finished with a complete game, despite taking the loss. She allowed 6 runs, 4 earned on 11 hits and 2 walks. she struck out two batters.
  • The Panthers were able to collect ten hits, with the majority of the damage coming from the top of the lineup.
  • Gabby Carpenter and Chloe Cordova each picked up 2 hits and scored a run.
  • Daytona Wentzel finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Hannah Lathrop went 1 for 4 but picked up a run batted in on her lone single.
  • Mackenzie Bonyak went 2 for 3.

Game 2:

  • Freshman Ashley Stein made her collegiate debut in the circle for the Panthers in the second game of the day. She got off to a good start, using a double play to shut down the Lions in the first.
  • The Lions were able to take a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. They loaded the bases on a single, error and walk. With two outs, Stein almost wriggled out of the jam unscathed. The Lions lined a ball back into the circle that deflected off of Stein and headed towards third base. Dolcey Shunk picked it up and attempted to force the runner out at third, but was half a step late, which allowed the first run to score.
  • The Lions tacked a second unearned on to Stein's record in the 3rd. The inning began with a Panther throwing error and an infield single. Following a sacrifice bunt, the Lions were able to push a run across on a ground out. Stein was able to get a final pop up to end the inning with just one run scored.
  • Penn State Behrend scored 3 more runs in the 4th. They used 4 straight hits, including two doubles to score the runs.
  • Kerrigan Hoffmann entered in the 5th and was able to keep the Lions at bay in the final three innings.
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to get a run back in the 5th. Jessica Milliron hit a double to deep center field to lead off the inning. She moved to third when Dolcey Shunk reached on an error, and scored on a Gabby carpenter fielder's choice.
  • The Panthers threatened to score again in the 7th. Kayla Day beat out an infield single to start the rally and moved to third when Marguerite DeFranco doubled to the gap in left-center. The inning and game came to a quick end however as Dolcey Shunk hit a hard line drive down the line that was snagged by the third baseman, who was able to step on the bag for the game-ending double play.
  • Stein picked up the loss in the game but had a promising start. She allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, in 4.0 innings of work.
  • Hoffman pitched the final 3 innings. She only allowed 2 hits and struck out 3.
  • Jessica Milliron was the only Panther to record a multi-hit game in the contest. she finished 2 for 2 with a double and she scored the PAnthers only run.
  • Gabby Carpenter picked up the lone RBI for the Panthers in the game.

The losses move the Panthers' record to 8-4. Despite playing a fellow AMCC member, this doubleheader did not count against their conference record, which remains at 6-2. The Panthers are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, as they head to Buffalo to take on Medaille.
