Roanoke Takes Both Sides Of Doubleheader Against Panthers

ROANOKE, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team suffered a pair of losses at Roanoke Friday afternoon as part of their four-game weekend trip to Virginia.

"Tough day," Head Coach Tina Phillips said. "Both were good games. The second game was better the than score indicated. We just need to string some hits together and get a big two-out hit. We're leaving too many people on base."

Madison East dropped in a pair of hits in the first game and knocked a triple in the second game while scoring the lone Panther run.

Grace Dadzaa had a pair of hits in the first game as well while Gabby Carpenter and Melissa Nye earned two hits apiece in the second game.

In the circle, Jordan Uhing tossed game one while Liz Dzurisin threw game two.

The Panthers will next travel to Bridgewater for a doubleheader Sunday.

Game One: Roanoke 3, Pitt-Bradford 2

After leaving East stranded in the top of the first, Roanoke came out in the bottom of the first and scored the first run of the game.

The Maroons added two more in the third with a two-run double.

The Panthers worked their way onto the scoreboard in the fourth, though.

Chandler White reached on an error to lead off the inning and later moved up to second on a groundout.

Sophia Fratercangelo then singled down the right-field line to score White and bring the score to 3-1.

The Panthers later added one in the next inning as Dadzaa singled, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from Betty Fratercangelo and then advanced to third on a single from East.

Dzurisin then put the ball in play and allowed Dadzaa to score.

Roanoke threatened to extend its lead in the bottom of the sixth, but a catch in the left-center field gap by Dadzaa left the bases loaded and ended the threat.

But Roanoke sent the Panthers down in order in the top of the seventh to hold on for the win.

Dadzaa and East both went 2-for-4, while Sophia Fratercangelo and Dzurisin drove in the two runs.

In the circle, Uhing tossed all six innings and struck out four batters while surrendering two earned runs.

Game Two (6 Innings): Roanoke 9, Pitt-Bradford 1

Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning before Roanoke scored three in the bottom of the second on a Panther error and a two-run single.

Pitt-Bradford threatened in the third as the Panthers loaded the bases on singles from Gabby Carpenter and Dadzaa followed by a walk to Nicole Nolte. But the Roanoke pitching would induce a lineout and leave all three runners stranded.

Roanoke got one across in the bottom of the third as a one-out triple came into score on a sacrifice fly.

Pitt-Bradford scored its first run of the game in the fifth.

East led off the frame with a triple and Nolte later brought her home with a single.

But Roanoke would rally in the fifth and score five runs to end the game, 9-1, by way of the eight-run rule.

Dzurisin threw for the Panthers in the circle and went all 5.2 innings. Six of the nine Roanoke runs went down as earned.

Pitt-Bradford earned seven hits, worked three walks and reached on a Maroon fielding error but left 10 runners on base.

Sunday's games at Bridgewater are set for 1 and 3 p.m. starts.
