Panthers Stay in 7th after Day 2 at Allegheny Empire Championships

Webster, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's swimming team held steady in 7th place as they brought their point total up to 132.50 on the second day of competition at the Allegheny Empire Swimming and Diving Championships.

Three Panthers were able to earn spots in the finals during the first session. Emma Slocum qualified for the 500-yard freestyle, while Isabella Cercone and Bailey Fedak both made the finals in the 50-yard freestyle. Overall, 8 Panthers competed in 2 of the preliminary events, while the Panthers closed the night with 2 teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay. 

Slocum was one of three Panthers to compete in the 500, earning a spot in the second session with the 18th-best qualifying time at 5:59.12. Madison Foote just missed out on qualification, earning an alternate spot in 22nd with a time of 6:09.36. Hannah Westover also competed in the event, finishing in 25th at 6:55.49. In the finals, Slocum was not able to improve on her qualifying time or place, taking 19th place in 6:01.92.

Five Panthers swam in the 50-yard freestyle, with 2 qualifying for finals. Isabella Cercone had the Panther's best time in the event, finishing 8th  with a time of 25.72 seconds. Bailey Fedak also posted a qualifying time, finishing in 26.63 seconds, putting her in 17th. Ruby Smith finished 30th in 32.72 seconds, while Willow Sandusky and Brooklyn Bellavia took 32nd and 33rd with times of 34.44 and 34.53. In the finals, Cercone finished tied for 9th in the 1 A-race, picking up 13.5 points with a time of 25.88 seconds. Fedak finished the event in 26.80 seconds, putting her in 18th place.

The second night of competition came to a close with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Panthers sponsored two relay teams in the event. The top team of Cercone, Foote, Slocum, and Fedak finished in 7th place with a time of 1:50.10. The Panthers 2nd team finished in 17th place, successfully completing the relay in 2:10.73.

Pitt-Bradford will be back in action tomorrow morning as they will compete in six more events. The events included on day 3 are the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, and 400-yard medley relay. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. with the finals commencing at 5:00 p.m.
