Panthers Fall in Season Opener

Bradford, Pa. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's swimming team opened their season on Saturday but were unable to come up with a win as they fell to Fredonia 97-74. 

Isabella Cercone had a huge meet for the Panthers, picking up 29 points for the Panthers. She began her day with a dominating victory in the 200-yard individual medley. She finished the race in 2:33.24, beating the field by more than 12 seconds. Her second race was her specialty, the 100-yard breaststroke. Cercone breezed to a 10-second win with a time of 1:15.43.

Her final event of the day was swimming the anchor leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay. Cercone entered the pool trailing the team from Fredonia by over a second and a half and was able to overtake her opponent and win the race by over a second. 

The Panthers were able to pick up three additional event wins in the meet. Madison Foote won the first event for the Panthers, easily taking the 1000-yard freestyle. She swam the distance event in 13:49.64, outpacing her opponent by 40 seconds. Bailey Fedak picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle. She swam the race in 2:20.52, winning the race by 12 seconds. Finally,  freshman Emma Slocum had a solid collegiate debut, winning the 500-yard freestyle and taking 2nd in the 50. She won the 500 with a time of 6:25.83, 48 seconds faster than her opponents, and finished the 50 in 28.11 seconds, .46 seconds behind the winner.

The Panthers (0-1) will have a bit of a lay-off before their next event. They will be back in action on Friday, October, 27th, when they face Alfred in an away dual meet. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.
