Panthers Dominate Wells to End Season with a Win

Aurora, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford finished its 2023 campaign in grand fashion, defeating Wells 6-0 on Tuesday evening.

The victory for the Panthers broke a long winless streak and was the first career win for head coach Lorenzo Rodriguez.

The Panthers jumped ahead early, as they were able to score in the 6th minute. Ainslie Gardner was able to steal the ball away from the Wells defense in the final third and lay a pass off to Makartnee Mortimer. Mortimer found Delaney Stowe streaking down the left wing with a through pass, who controlled the ball and fired into the net at the near post. Stowe struck again for the Panthers just over 10 minutes later. Gardner once again pressured the Wells defense and forced a turnover, before turning and firing a cross-field pass to Stowe. The senior controlled the pass, took a dribble inside, and blasted a left-footed shot into the goal to double the lead. With time dwindling in the half, Stowe completed her hat trick in the final minute of the first. Kimberly Goodwin received a pass near midfield and touched a ball to Mortimer who was overlapping her on the right. Mortimer played a through-ball with plenty of space behind the defense, where Stowe was able to run onto the pass and slide a shot past the onrushing Wells goalkeeper for her third.

The offensive onslaught continued for the Panthers in the 2nd half. Pitt-Bradford added their 4th goal in the 62nd minute. Makartnee Mortimer received a pass from Gardner on the left wing and was able to dribble past a Wells defender. She took a shot at a tight angle and was able to force it through the Express keeper for her first collegiate goal. Wells's best chance to score came in the 67th minute after substitute goalkeeper Raquel Sewell was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Sewell was able to make up for the mistake, saving the shot to keep the shutout intact.

With 15 minutes to go, The Panthers added two more to their tally with two goals in a 90-second span. Chloe Shaw got the first, as she hit a one-time chip shot from 25 yards out to score her first of the season. Ainslie Gardner assisted the goal. In the next minute, Gracie Riek was able to find space on the right edge of the 18-yard box, she played a pass into Harley Ficek at the Penalty spot, who controlled the pass with one touch and fired a right-footed shot to the keeper's left for her first career goal. The Panthers controlled the majority of possession over the final 10 minutes to see out the victory, with Sewell making one more save in the 80th minute.

Delaney Stowe's hat trick was the program's first since Courtney Shade scored 4 in a win over Hilbert in 2019. She brought her season total to 5. Stowe had 12 shots in the game, putting 10 of them on target. Chloe Shaw scored her first goal for the Panthers, while Makartnee Mortimer and Harley Ficek both scored their first career goals in the victory. Mortimer also had two assists in the game to go along with 12 shots, 4 of them on goal. Ainslie Gardner also had 2 assists in the victory. She took 6 shots and put 5 on net. Grace Riek had the final assist for the Panthers. Goalkeeper Alyssa Andersen picked up her first career win despite not making a save in 55 minutes of action.
